Hornady 68grn HPBT Match loads for 1:9 .223

I have a few boxes of Hornady 68grn HPBT Match bullets that I want to use in a Savage 12LRPV with 1:9 twist.

I tried these bullets in my Tikka 1:8 twist with Varget powder and had less than stellar results. I was hoping maybe somebody had a good load for a 1:9 twist barrel and these Hornady bullets that I could get started with anyway.

I use the same load in my Savage BVSS and AR. 22.5gr WC735 surplus from higginson seated to mag length on the AR. Groups about 1" with the AR about 0.6" with the Savage.

I have a Tikka T3 stainless varmint as well.

My best groups with the 68 gr Hornady HP Match bullets used BR4 primers and 23.5 gr of IMR4895.

Definitely work your way up to that charge carefully it will be near the high end of the pressure range and different rifles will develop different pressure levels......
 
I load the 69gr SMK with 26gr of Varget, and they work great. I can't see 1 grain of bullet weight making a difference, but I haven't shot the Hornadys.

The Hornady 68gr HPBT is a little longer overall than the SMKs, so it would depend on how far into the case you seat them.

I've loaded 25 grains of Varget under both the 68 & 75 grain Hornady's with excellent results. Both loaded for ARs at 2.250" OAL. The Sierras can take half a grain more seated to this depth.

I also seat mine to 2.250", with 26gr Varget, and get very little powder compression.

When you mention 75gr Hornady, which bullet is that? A-max?
 
Nope, 75gr. HPBT. -very similar to the 77gr. SMK - and can be loaded to mag length.

I've found the 69SMK and 26 grains of Varget are hot at 2.25" without any real gain in velocity. Half a grain less and all smooths out.
 
For my 24" 1:9 twist;
I load the 68gr. Hornady HPBT with 26.0gr of Varget,
OAL of 2.280" and have a velosity of 3000fps, + or - 10.
This is a compressed powder charge.
Extremely accurate for me.
