does anyone use hornady amax bullets for hunting or are they a strictly paper puncher:confused:
i plan on using 162 grn amax for a 7mm saum, and all i hunt are whitetail deer, and paper!
any replys would be appreciated
thanks

I use the same bullet in my .280 Rem strictly for paper punching and I am very happy with it. The only issue is that I have to seat them so far out to squeeze the last ounce of accuracy out of them that they are too long for the magazine and you have to single feed them. It's not a big deal for me as they are strictly for paper. I stick with 160 gr Barnes TSX for hunting.

I would switch to the SST bullet its the same type similar frame bit shorter as the a-max just designed better for hunting thicker jacket and lock ring. Great bullet for deer.
Its almost as accurate as the amax.
The amax no doubt will work but would make me nervous, its only a paper punching bullet by design.

thanks for the posts, but i was just talking to the owner of the local gunshop and he stated that they may have too thin of a jacket to perform sufficiently on wildlife.
i think i'll stick with my 140 grn nosler bt,they are as accurate as i can be, as my best grouping was 5 strings of 2 shots into an inch at 100yards, and they do kill deer!

AMAX are target bullets with light jackets. Although they're not going to be ideal in terms of expansion and terminal performance they should be fine for white tails.

They are or can be very accurate which is probably more important than terminal performance anyway.

155gr Amax, 308 pushing them 2875fps muzzle velocity, range 385yds, drilled through 5/16" mild steel gong. I assume that is enough to break the skin on an animal.

If you want massive damage and spectacular exit wounds (and some spectacular bruising), the Amax will do it when used at closer ranges. Just don't expect to get Texas type penetration.

Broadside, no shoulders, under 2900fps impact velocity - PUFF.

For longer distances, they become ideal offering controlled expansion at lower velocities.

I shot a buck this year with one at just over 400yrds with my 300wm. Through the shoulder, lung, back edge of heart and stopped in the other lung. He went 3 steps and fell over.

Good post, good info........I am currently working on loads for my Encore 7mm Rem Mag heavy barrel. I use 162 Amax and sighted in at 100 yards with 72.5 gr of H1000 with 2" 3 shot groups, I am hoping to find the sweet load to tighten the groups. I am working up from 69 grains in half grain increases in hopes of getting there........we'll see. I plan on using Amax's for deer only, maybe the odd yodle dog, heck even a few buck gophers.

I second the SST. It works very well on deer.

Switched to the Interbond last year. Bullets performed better and retained more weight. But the SST worked well on all I shot with it
