hey guys, I know nothing about reloading, and have heard that Hornady AMAX bullets are very good and that they do fragment somewhat (.308) so anyways, I bought some bullets and cases, and am heading over to my old man's house to load up some 155 gr. AMAX's. My old man has powder and primers, and loads for .308, 30-06, 7mm rem mag, and .243.

Which powder should I use? How much do I put in each case? I know there is a standard, but how much can you deviate from this? These will be fired out of an m-14. He has all the powders and stuff, but what will happen if I put the wrong one in?

This is my first time reloading, and I don't wanna KAboom myself or the rifle.

Oh yeah, I forgot, the title says amax and TAP. Is a hornady TAP AMAX cartridge basically just their special case, powder, and primer with an AMAX bullet?

I have been looking for some Hornady TAP ammo, but I don't beleive it is available in Canada.

the TAP is a Vmax bullet, not the Amax

vmax is flat based spitzer, light weight for caliber

amax is boat tail match bullet

both have red poly tips

Well... I was at a rifle match in the US today and scored a couple boxes from a generous L.E.O.
The .308 Win TAP are a 168gr. A-MAX loaded to 2700fps.

Who knows... maybe Hornady offers their TAP ammo with different bullets.
Look 'em up at Hornady...

No, reading Hornady's blurb on the A-Max is that they're a target/match bullet that opens up very quickly on game, and is suitable for deer-type game. The VMAX is downright explosive.

Some of the 223 TAP is VMAX, some are AMAX.

my bad, I was thinking about a Hornady tactical 110 grain load

that bullet would be a Vmax

I've shot 155 AMAX for years in competition. I've always believed it to be a highly frangible bullet. But then I read something on one of the other threads on this forum that raised my eyebrows.

If I recall, Mysticplayer (a highly respectable and trustworthy source) mentioned that he shot a 3/8 inch steel plate at 385 yards with a 155 AMAX out of a .308, and the round just punched through. That's fairly serious performance for such a supposedly fragile bullet. After hearing this, I would be comfortable using it for deer hunting out of a .308 or .30-06.

I can also see why it's loaded by Hornady as a sniper bullet.
