Hey guys, I've noticed the COAL recommendation is Max 2.810, however the COAL of these factory bullets is around 2.79... I measure off the ogive when I'm reloading but it just seems really odd the factory ammo makes their rounds so much shorter, is there a reason for this?

Factory ammo is often quite short so that it will fit in everything. They don't want a bullet jammed into the lands causing pressure spikes.

Factory ammo is size 14 so that most customers size 9 feet will fit.

With reloads you can make your ammo size 10 to fit your size 10 1/2 chamber.

SAAMI sets the tolerance range for both ammo and chambers.

Some makers make ammo at the small end of the tolerance range.

Some gun makers make chambers at the big end of the tolerance range.

The result is ammo guaranteed to chamber.

Factory loaded ammo is required to meet the .308 Winchester SAAMI specifications. SAAMI specifies a minimum length of 2.490 and a max of 2.810". They probably target the high end of that range to give more powder room, but not the maximum so normal manufacturing tolerances don't put them out of specification.
