I reload for .223 and was wondering what the difference was between the A-Max and the V-Max were and which would be better for coyotes. I presently have 52gr HPBT Match bullets.

hornady says you can use both on small game (up to deer in the bigger calbers)
the amax will open up more consistently than other "plastic tipped" match bullets
the vmax will "explode" pretty quick after entry and will rarely exit coyote sized animals after turning their insides into slurpees
i have used vmax almost exclusively in rifles 6mm/243 and under for at least six years and amax in 30 cal because i use the same load for everything varmints/deer/match my only caveat on 30 cal amax and coyotes is don't hit the spine near the ribcage, i almost cut a coyote in half once with the bone shrapnel and expanding bullet....

those v-max definately "explode".
i run a .17 and found the 20gr V-max to be too light as well as explode to fast.
the .22 being heavier may not have that problem. just something to watch out for.

Just took some V-Max's out to the GSG (Gopher Slaying Grounds) today and found out just HOW explosive they are. I meant to try some of the A-Max in both my .223 and .22-250 to see how they compared but I did not get a chance.

The A-Max are built as a Match bullet (i.e. Shooting tiny holes in large paper) and the V-Max have a thinner skin which makes them more frangible (i.e. for opening large holes in tiny critters)

Thanks for all the replys. For not damaging a pelt, but dropping the coyote which would be the best? I assume the V-Max?

to preserve pelt quality i would go with v-max or maybe try those barnes varmit grenade.
personaly i shoot .17 hornady HP in 25 gr and find it works perfectly from 25 to 350m.

A buddy use 50 gr vmax's for a short time on coyotes to us they seemed way too soft nasty surface wounds thatr did not make it to the vital reliably. The 55 might be different but he went back to nosler bt's, in his experience he found them much more reliable a killer and unless you hit bone decently fur friendly.

Mind you the bullet your using now seems to come up often as a good fur bullet I am not sure you have a problem to fix.

Another good bullet to try out of a 223 is the Hornady SX line. OK... they're from the generation before plastic tipped bullets, but at modest velocity, they are really explosive. I shoot them out of my 222 and quite often they won't exit.

Yup and they are cheaper! Best shooting bullet so far in my little .222.
The AMax and the Vmax use the same jacket. A call to Hornady will confirm this. The quality control is a little more ridgid on the AMax. Most match type bullets aren't a good choice but the case is different with the AMax. They are a boattail like the 50 Vmax and they do explode very nicely on warm fleshed target medium
