Hornady DGS & DGX

I got a box of 400 gr .416" DGX from the Hornady guy at the SCI show. Just waiting to try them out. Maybe take them to Zim next summer if they behave. I like the look of the DGS but I think I'd prefer the Barnes Banded Solid as it appears to have a wider nose.
 
I'm going to shoot some in my Rigby this week. DGX. Will let you know the speed and accuracy. I have 40 that I bought for the brass as its cheaper than empty norma. Good practice too.
 
Yes, let me know your results. I just picked up a .458 WM, and was thinking of trying some. Any dealers stocking them in Canada? The Barnes solids are great, but a bit pricey for practice.
 
I have some of each but haven't tried them on game yet. Mysticplayer can get them for you, I got mine from him.
 
From what I have read from Hornady these DGX will not expand very much. They are copper clad steel like the solids. I will try to find a suitable target though but I don't expect to get a picture of a mushroomed bullet. Mine are factory loaded so I am interested in a chrony more than anything.

Just curious where you got the factory ammo from. Does WS carry them?
 
At Bartons in Grande Prairie. They had about 6 boxes when I went through one time so I picked up 2 to try out. Mostly for the brass as it can be hard to find. I figured this was good practice and maybe if it was real accurate I'd shoot a moose this fall with them. Lots of guns to pick from though...
 
Tonight we shot the DGX in the 416 and it kept together very well. Holding I would guess 85-90% of its weight. The woodlieghs in 375 shot in a 378 @ 2580 opened right up to almost the base but very big mushroom. The 500gr Hornady RN @ 2400ish was opening up to the cannelure. Another big mushroom. It looks like for the big stuff the DGX is a tough bullet. But I would not want to be a moose or buff getting hit with any of these.

Now my small non scientific tests mean nothing but its all I have so I am passing it along. We were just out to shoot and have fun and dug the bullets out cuz thats what we do. Curious about that stuff.:cool:
 
Well,
I used the factory hornady 458lott load with the 500gr dgx to shoot a bunch of stuff this spring,
cape Buffalo 1 shot thru the heart frontal shot at 70 yards.
bullet penetrated about 2 feet- ended in the paunch. Shed its front end and all the lead- I haven't weighed it yet but it looks like it retained about 50%(edit to add: it weighs 341grs)- Buff died in about 20yards/10 seconds. This bullet never touched a bone and the beast died- but with anything other than a perfect shot, Or if I would of had to shoot thru the shoulder I'm not so sure the result would have been as favourable.

Kudu- shot with a texas heart shot (4 times)- not sure where the bullets ended up penetrated about 3ft- ran 150 yards and died.

Zebra's, I didn't recover any bullets from a couple of raking shots, penetration was 3+ feet

Impala -shot a bunch- 1 I remember specifically shot frontal @about 70 yards- bullet didn't exit. I know I didn't get as much penetration as I would of with an identical shot with @ 300wsm with 180 grain partitions.( I know this because I shot an identical shot with that load into another impala about 1/2 hr later and we found the bullet under the skin in the hind quarter.

I never ended up using the DGS for anything so have no comments there. My results from shooting the 500 gr DGX into about 10 different critters big and small leads me to say it will get the job done, but I won't be using them on game again.
All recovered bullets looked the same- basically no mushroom, front end broken off, most if not all lead was shed.



Performance was not even close to a Premium bullet like the swift/woodleigh/tsx. Partitions would of been a much better choice as well.

Interesting results notlim2424. What bullet out of those three would you prefer? (Swift, Barnes, Woodleigh)
Is there a dealer in Canada that sells Woodleigh?
 
I have bought Woodies in 416,375 and 404 from Corlane in Dawson. Not cheap but they seem to be good bullets so far. Very traditional. I think the TSX is the cheapest for the big bores in a premium and pretty easy to get. I have used them for years in the 416 with very good results.
 
I get my woodleighs from wolverine, I don't know how many calibers he stocks, but he always seems to have 500 grains for my .470NE which is what I need so I don't ask no questions. So far I have only used the Woodleighs in my double. thats because I'm a bit paranoid with it and figure that they will be the gentlest bullets on those soldered together pipes. I have zero doubts whether they will work well or not in a bolt rifle though.

Its just easier to get the barnes or swifts most of the time so thats what I end up with.

I think I am equally happy with the swift or the Barnes.
If I had to pick one it would probably be the .... Damn I don't know:confused:- I would flip a coin.

If one will get the job done then the other will as well. In the past I have just taken whichever one groups best in that particular rifle, on that particular day. I really don't feel I am handicapped at all if I have to use partitions either- Accubonds I can take em or leave em though.
