Hornady Die Question

I bought my first progressive press a couple weeks ago - a Hornady LnL. I am looking to get 9mm dies to start out. Fairly new to reloading, I mainly just help a buddy on his press every once in a while. I saw this die set at bass pro http://www.hornady.com/store/9mm-Luger-9-x-21-.355-3-Die-Set and was wondering. The seater die it has contains a roll crimp. I thought taper crimps were needed for autoloaders?

Are these dies useless since you need a separate taper crimp die anyway? Should I just source out the http://www.hornady.com/store/9mm-Luger-9-x-21-.355-Taper-Crimp-3-Die-Set instead? It leaves more room on the press for a bullet feed or lockout die. Correct?

I have an LNL, an if you have enough light and are diligent in checking your cases, I would forget about a powder check or lockout die. I bought the second set you listed (taper crimp) for my 45acp and found it very difficult to set up since the LNL suffers from differing OAL lengths unless all five stages are full of brass.

For my 40 I use a redding set that seats and crimps in a seperate operation, I would highly recommend this route and just buy a seperate expanding die as these sets usually don't include one. LEE also sells a factory crimp die that you could put in the fifth station and just use the hornady set to seat the bullet without using the roll function of that particular die.

What makes you think it has a roll crimp die? Taper is fairly standard for pistol cartridges. Don't go by a picture in advertising.
You don't need Hornady dies just because you have their press either.

I googled the part number and found this "The set includes a CGND Nitride Full-length Sizing Die, CGND Adjustable Case Mouth Expander Die, and CGND Seater Die with roll crimp."

And I agree, I don't NEED Hornady, but I figured I might as well. A friend of mine has both Lee and Hornady and says he regrets ever buying the Lee ones due to Hornady's being a better product along with better customer service.

edit: I didn't find RCBS dies at Bass Pro, but I did find Hornady. I haven't really looked hard for dies, just kind of stopped in there to check what they have.

Read what the OP is saying before spouting off again, The OP is well aware that Hornady markets two sets of seater dies. The 9mm is not limited to autoloaders, there are some revolvers out there ie, a ruger convertable blackhawk.

Now that thats out of the way, to add to your choice of Hornady dies. I have used RCBS, LEE, HORNADY, and REDDING and they all work the same. However Hornady is the only company that I have dealt with that will replace a broken peice on spec regardless of whether you can provide a receipt, are the original owner etc.

The other benefit to Hornady dies are the lockrings. They cost you nothing since they come with the dies and they are the best in the buisness only comparable to the forsters (although the forsters lack the wrench flats and are made of aluminum instead of steel) They also come in a large size die box that will accomodate the LNL bushings unlike RCBS or REDDING boxes that are really small.

RCBS will do this as well with no questions asked. I have a set of there dies that older then I am and they sent me parts for it. I Do however like the hornady seating die and the way It drops down and "aligns" the bullet before going in to the actual seating part of the die. OP your correct in wanting a taper crimp style die set, not only does 9mm headspace off the case mouth, unless you were to sort and measure you cases, roll crimps would be inconsistent.
