Hornady L&L - its time to get rolling.

after sitting on the fence for a year i decided to roll my own. :)
on a recent trip south of the border i got myself a hornady lock & load with all the bits and bob to go with it. they didnt have any shell plates so i would need to make a trip to epps soon for that and the powder.

I need some input form you guys as to what is the cleanest powder (for pistols)to load 9mm for my glocks.

what would you recommend ?

I've read that Winchester WST is supposed to be pretty clean. Personally, I picked up some Winchester 231/Hodgdon HP-38. I'm not concerned with cleanliness.
 
Titegroup 4 to 4.2 gr behind a 124gr bullet is quite clean. The cases will have a small stain on them usually on one side but its normal. Unique at 5 - 5.3 gr behind the same bullet is just as clean for the gun and the cases are a little cleaner
 
Clean, cleaner & cleanest, easy metering too = Vihtavuori n310 or n320. Detractors will call it expensive but for all you'll put in a 9, you won't care.
 
It works just as good for 115gr, you just use a few tenths of a grain more. Alomost everyone, myself included goes for titegroup at first. Then you get a feel for what you like and start trying others.My wife has stuck with 4gr and 124gr bullet, but she doesnt like change lol. I found I liked the feel of the recoil with unique, more of a push whereas tight group is more of a snap. Many good choices out there so dont be afraid to try others once you get a feel for what you like.

I used to use titegroup and really like it and it is clean but I recently switched over to vv n-340 and this stuff is incredibly clean and temp stable by far the best pistol powder I've used yet.

slow and carefull i guess. i am so friggin nervous shooting anyone's reloads. in fact i never shoot reloads after a friend blew his glock. he had double charged the cartridge.
i guess i am going to be extra careful and it will take some time before i get the feel. loll
 
Its pretty tough to double charge when using a progressive press, not impossible, but tough. Thats another upside to some of the other powders. Some will overflow the case if you get a double charge. With Titegroup you can get double in there easily. Just go slow and pay attention until you get a good feel for it and you'll be fine. As for shooting someone elses reloads, dont do it until you've seen him shoot a few AND you know and trust him. Just not worth it as there are seveal careless re
loaders out there
 
Yup.. I never let a shell slip by if I haven't visually inspected the powder level. Extra protection against a double charge (or squib).

Personally I wouldn't shoot someone else's reloads.
 
I do shoot others' reloads, but we shoot and reload together regularly. We all follow the same procedures and frequently check each other's work.

I definitely wouldn't shoot reloads done by someone I hadn't seen reloading, and even then not unless they shoot them first!

I hope you find it as addictive as I do, having spent some time reloading on a friend's press, I'm now in the market for my own.

Yep, I mentioned the RCBS Lockout Die in an earlier post. They're about 60 bux as I recall. Now that I've used one, I wouldn't be without one if they cost twice that. Just set it up and then crank away, you cannot produce a squib or a double. Even a load that isn't a squib but just significantly short on powder will cause the die to lock up the press,, love it !

As a technical matter of interest, the die is "fail safe", meaning its natural state of being is locked up. The idents (2) must line up perfectly (near as damn ;)) before the die will function. This only happens when the powder level in the case is correct.
 
I have a LnL with the case feeder and it is great. I use a powder through expander in the powder dispenser, then a Hornady Powder Cop die, the a seating die, and finally a crimp die. I like the Powder Cop die quite a bit; it is not quite as fancy as the lock out dies, but if you keep you eye glued to it, I find it is quite accurate.
 
Unique in a 9mm cannot be double charged. even 4.8 gn will over flow if doubled up.
