I picked up a couple of boxes of the 325 gr .45-70 ammo for a pal while I was down south. As far as I know he hasn't shot it yet, so I can't comment on accuracy or recoil. Seems to me the price was about $68.00 for 2 boxes once the tax was added.
Now that I've seen this ammo, I am not at all convinced that it would be any safer in a tube magazine than any other ammo loaded with a pointed bullet. Yes I know what the folks at Hornady say, but the tip appears to be nearly as stiff as the tip of a ballistic tip, and in my opinion under the right circumstances a pointy nylon tip could still set off the round ahead of it in a tube magazine.
The .45-70 is a good medium range big game round when loaded with heavy flat nosed bullets. A pointed bullet creating a smaller entrance wound is not going to improve the performance of the round. As for the flatter trajectory, and I doubt if many could make use of the difference under real world hunting conditions. But again this is conjecture as we have not tested the stuff yet.
