Hi all,

I'm considering ordering a Hornady Lock-N-Load AP presse and I would like to use my existing Lee die set in 9mm.

For now, I don't plan to buy the case feeder or bullet feeder.

What else I need to buy other than the presse to be up and running

I know that I will need this:

1 x Shell plate for 9mm

Do I need Lock-N-Load bushing or the presse already come with few of them?

Thanks again for your help!

the press comes with 5 bushings (one for each station). so unless you are loading more than 1 calibre, you should be good to go. The only other thing you need is a shellplate, and I would recommend getting an extra pack of retention springs as they have a habit of stretching out over time.

Other than that, good choice on the press! I love mine

Thanks for the answer chrisward3.

One of my friend is trying to convince me to go with a Dillon XL650 instead, but it's a lot of extra cash....

Are Hornady Lock-N-Load AP press users having trouble with this press and do you thing it's a good press compared to the Dillon XL650? I took a look at the sticky with the review of both press, by my friend is telling me that there is some problem with the Hornady one...

Thanks again

I was between the 650 and LNLAP last xmas when I was purchasing, and decided to go with the Hornady. Have a read of the 3-press comparison (stickied in the top of the section), and watch the videos on youtube of each press.

I went with Hornady because of the cost (cheaper than Dillon, and everything came ready with minimal setup), the quick calibre changes (thanks to the bushing system), and found that Dillon was so hyped-up by the "Blue koolaid" guys that I wanted to try the competition.

In the end I have been pleasantly surprised by the Hornady, and can pump out just as many rounds as the Dillon, without any hiccups, for cheaper.

Check out some youtube vids that go through its function and Im sure you'll be sold too.

All press's have there little quirks and a gremlin will creep up time to time. All else said I have the hornady and can get 400-600 an hour with it in 9mm if you have the primer tubes loaded . Its a great press at a great price + you get free bullets as well witch make the press even mor affordable

I had some troubles getting mine working just perfectly, and I've had a bit of light rust on some of the parts, but I don't expect these issues to be proprietary to Hornady. Once you get them going, they're great machines. I'm looking forward to the bullet feeder assembly when Hornady irons out the feeder for rifle rounds. Would be great to roll 800 5.56 rounds in an hour.

I love my LNL! Close to 5K of 9mm through it with no issues. Have 3 buddies that love theirs as well.
It was the sticky comparison that did it for me.

I am set up for 6 calibers with no hiccups!

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm pretty much decided on the Hornady.

One think missing on the Hornady is a shell tube like on the Dillon XL650 for people that do not purchase the case feeder.

I have to agree with the great warrany. I bought a used press that was missing a few parts. I called Hornady expecting to have to buy the parts. Nope was told they were warranty parts and shipped me them free of charge.

X2

Extra retaining springs (3 pack) have already been recommended as have extra primer feeder tubes to help you stay on a roll. I'd recommend a RCBS "Lockout" die too, (they're not cheap :(), especially if/when you acquire a case feeder. "Read the instructions before you set the press up". Most minor problems with the AP are a result of not doing this!! ;).

ENJOY !!

i also love my LNL i have used the 550 650 and the LNL and 550 really cant be compared so its between the 650 and LNL and i really believe the LNL to be a better press my only problem to date is 1 of the grease nipples broke and with .4o cal had some ejection problems which i then revealed it was a flaw in the shell plate. I also recommend extra springs and most of all make sure you get hornady one shot gun cleaner to clean your powder measure it is very important to clean it very well with the one shot cleaner to avoid powder sticking and prevent rust. also get some white lithium grease for your shell plate ball detents and a grease gun for the nipples and you should be set just keep everything well greased and you will never have a problem they are excellent presses and the bushings are way better then expensive caliber changes dillon has in my opinion i also recommend getting some of hornadys die lock rings they work much better then most other brands and are very important to consistent die setting. i also agree with extra primer tubes and a lockout die my lockout die has saved me before i wont reload without it now!!! also look into a powder thru expander i use one from powderfunnels .com and it works excellent and frees up another die spot by removing your expander die. and with any reloading i recommend the lee factory crimp die it makes a really nice crimp. i also recommend anyone looking to buy a press check out Henry at budgetshootersupply .ca he has good prices and excellent service i wont use anyone else

Good Luck and enjoy your new press

Thanks for all the tips guys. I ordered the Hornady powder cop die but I should have brought the RCBS lock-out die instead. Too late for now, I will see how it work out with the cop die. I took note for the extra primers tube and this will be in my next order.

Is the brake cleaner will clean the powder measure as well as the Hornady one shot cleaner ???

Thanks
