hornady neck die

i was wondering when necksizing for my .243, my die is very stiff to move even with lube, i checked the diameter and it sized it down like to about .220 then the mandrelsized it back up to .242, is this normal for most dies or is this one not right? any help on stiff die movement compared to my lee .243 full length which is 10 times easier to resize.

Full length should take more force. I've never used hornady dies but I never lube while neck sizing. But yes the mouth gets sized undersized and then an expander ball pushes it back out to size. What press you got?

is it on the sizing stroke of the press or trying to take the casing out. In the case of the latter, it is the expander ball.

You need some lube inside the neck.

something isn't making sense. The outside of a 243 case after resizing, with average brass and a standard die should be about .267 or so. Depends on the die and the brass. The expander ball pushed them out a bit on extraction, but where are you getting a measurement of .220 and .243??

The inside diameter of a case will be slightly larger than .243 after firing and slightly under after re-sizing, but nothing should be getting as small as .220" That would means your neck is being squeezed down with a 22 cal die and expanded with a 6mm (.243") expander ball. like I said, something isn't right.
