Hornady Outfitter 80 gr GMX 243 ammunition?

I have used gmx bullets successfully on moose and 2 black bear. I was impressed. An 80gr bullet would be screaming fast in a 243. I wouldnt hesitate to use one on a game animal. They hold together great. Perfect mushrooms.

I have never used that particular load, Ted, but I use a number of GMX bullets in various loads... my experience with GMX bullets on game has been excellent... as said above, perfect mushrooms on the few that have been recovered.

I shot a whitetail with that load. It was a close shot through the ribs and the bullet exited. Deer went perhaps 20 feet. Not much of an endorsement as any bullet would have worked in that situation.

There was a good review of mono-metal bullets on a British hunting show.(sorry, I don't remember the link). The GMX performed well in their tests.

GMX's are a little softer than Barnes from what I have seen, but that has been limited to 0.224" and 0.284" offerings. And a pretty small sample size to be honest, maybe 6 whitetails with the 55 gr GMX (223 Rem) and an elk with the 139 GMX (7 RM).

I think all of them were recovered, showing great expansion, and really good penetration. The 55's were all similar presentation - quartering in, point of shoulder impact and found under the hide at the last ribs. The 139 was a fair long poke and was under the hide after punching ribs and catching the back of the offside shoulder muscles.

I'd be confident with an 80 gr at any deer at normal ranges from most angles.

Well, it's going to get a workout this year. Friend of mine's teenage daughter wants to get a black bear this Spring for a rug. Check!

Then she wants to go sheep hunting in August. Check!

Moose in September. Check!

And, caribou in November. Check!

I do like the term "Outfitter" in your cartridge description as well. It adds so much to gun control and good, safe shooting but the "Outfitters" conduct of ethics, lol.

You nailed it this time. Thumbs up!

outfitter by hornady are supposed to be completly waterproof ..they laquer the primer and bullet where it meets the case to seal it.... gmx are what ive switched to for game i intend to eat.... gmxs are loaded lighter weight for caliber and pumped up for speed.. bullet holds together and speed kills.. i would have no problem using the 243 with gmxs on deer or larger critters. will see how they work this year as im going to use the 120 in the creedmoore. in europe they use the 110 gr in the 308 on pigs

a busy year ...

If she and her dad get half of that hunting done, she will be very busy and very happy girl.

Everything I read about the Hornady Outfitter ammo has been positive. Appreciate hearing firsthand from those who have actually used it.

We'll see, starting with Spring bear season.

I'm kind of surprised that you are even interested in factory ammo, Ted...

Well, like I said it kind of just stumbled into my life, Hoyt. Never buy factory, but every once in a while some comes along in a deal. First we'll see how it shoots in the Stevens 200. :)

So, a three-quarter inch group at 100 will be more than good enough for Spring bear. :) Next trip to the range will be a target at 300 meters.

We will not be encouraging her to be shooting that far at a live animal, but practice at that range makes the usual 50-100 yard distance on bear a chip shot.
