I have a 30-06 Ruger M77, want to buy a 300 win mag
for longer shots. But I have been reading about the Hornady
Superformance SST and GMX. 180 grain only appears to come
in the SST,,, lead fill I think.
My question is, will this ammo give me the extra, speed, flatness, and
punch I want to make that ocasional 400+ yd shot at Elk?

"...extra, speed, flatness, and punch..." Plus considerably more felt recoil. The important part is your ability to hit a 9" pie plate, every time, at 400+ distances. If you can't, don't take the shot.

I should clear up the question. It appears as if this ammo can give me close to 300 win numbers with my 30-06 without changing rifles.. More recoil doesn't bother me.
I would make sure I can hit the target at long range before shooting in the feild, with any gun or bullet.
I want to make sure that the bullet can do the job, when I am confident that I can do the job.

The Hornady SST in 30-06 in their factory custom ammunition has no problem with elk at 400yds as long as you do your part and drive it home! I use this cartridge exclusively in my 06 in the 165gr version and has NEVER had one walk away(touch wood). I have researched the new superformance from Hornady and am very confident in their ability to meet the specs given for that cartridge. I have chronoed the 165 and the results were as close to theirs as one could expect.
There is no substitute for proper bullet placement!

Acually according to Hornady there is NO increase in felt recoil, something to do with the burning rates of the new powders used.

Since reading about the Superformance ammo on Hornady sites I've been doing some comparing of it to the Win. XP3's I've been using. I'm trying to decided whether it's worth it or not to change over the SF bullets from the XP3. I know cost might be a factor as I'm paying $46 (taxes include) a box for XP3's. If I can get the Superformance for around $30 to $35 (taxes included) I may change over. My max shot I'm looking to take would in the 300 to 350 range. I shot the 30-30 win 160gr Leverevolution and love them, so I might just do it to try out the SF ammo anyways, and yes according to Hornady site there is no increase felt recoil. Here is the blurp from the site about Superformance:
The NEW standard by which all ammunition will be judged.
Fast
Superformance ammunition is 100 to 200 fps FASTER than any conventional ammunition on the market today, and achieves this performance in EVERY gun, WITHOUT increases in felt recoil, muzzle blast, temperature sensitivity, fouling or loss of accuracy.

Innovative
Superformance is a cutting edge technological advancement in ammunition design that transcends convention and achieves the highest performance of any ammunition on the market today.

Specialized
Superformance uses ultra progressive propellants that take your favorite SST or GMX bullets to levels of performance that are simply unattainable with conventional propellants. In order to get more velocity in the past – shooters have used a brute force approach – large charge weights of a slow burning powder in a larger cartridge case. Ultimately this leads to more recoil and muzzle blast. The Superformance solution is an elegant approach that utilizes specialized powders…at NORMAL charge weights, that impart ALL useable energy to the bullet reducing the ROCKET NOZZLE EFFECT at the muzzle while still increasing velocity!

Versatile
Superformance provides increased performance, and is safe to use in ALL firearms, including semi-autos, lever gun and pump actions.

Increases in rifle performance, no increases in barrel wear and felt recoil, along with superior temperature stability are all realized with Superformance ammunition.

It really IS… Rocket Science!

I think I have to agree with sunray on this one. If you shoot your Ruger well stay with it and try the SuperFormance ammo. If it is accurate in your rifle then use it!! Location, location, location - the 9" pie plate at 400 yds is a good target to try. To quote Dirty Harry "a mans got to know his limitations" and if this is within your abilities then stay with the old 06!! The GMX or SST in the 165s or 180s will be elk slayers in 30-06!!

Call rick at ATRS site sponsor and he will line you up with some hornaday TAP for the 300 win mag, it will be all you need to drop that elk at up to 800 yards. Match grade accuracy and designed to stop the animal in its tracks.

To augment my earlier comment... in the last four days I have used the SP 30-06 180gr SST in my Rem 700 SPS to take a whitetail doe at 255 yds and two mule deer does at 308 yds. Two of them were right through the boiler room and dropped where they stood. The third was hit slightly back but though the rear lobes of the lungs and went about 50 yds and dropped. No bullets were recovered. This rifle was sighted in dead on at 200 yds and produced 3-shot 100 yd groups that averaged .348 and one 3-shot 200 yd group of .575. Felt recoil from this round compared to a 180gr Federal Classic BTSP was less at the range!! At $31 a box from Cabela's Canada I will not even attempt to replicate this round. The kicker to all this is my buddy, using his 700 SPS 30-06 with 165gr SST ammo dropped a WT doe at 250 yds with one shot to the head. If you do your part this ammo will take elk at 400 yds.

For info - range testing the GMX showed the 165gr bullet shot as well as the 165 SST in my buddy's rifle AND to the same point of aim. Ditto for my rifle. Although slightly more money ($43) the GMX might and I say MIGHT be better for elk but over the years I have shot elk with Sierra GameKing 150gr bullets in my 280 at distances from 150 to 325 yds and never had them go more than 50-60 yds before collapsing!!

The bottom line is, as has been said, you have to do your part!! And closer is always better than farther if you can sneak in!! Good Luck!!
