Hornady SST bullets

Hello,
I've heard mixed reviews on using these bullets for hunting. Can anyone with experience tell my if this is a good bullet for deer and moose?

My experience on deer and a sheep was that performance is similar to Nosler Ballistic tips - very frangible. Both animals were bang flops as they received the SST in the lungs broadside, but there was no exit wound on either.

Due to the frangible design (and a real doubt that they would penetrate on a shoulder shot)I would not use them on Deer or Moose personally, but would rather search a controlled expansion option.

I know I won't be using them on anything other than paper from now on.

They are one of my favorite deer bullets! Might be a little soft for best performance on larger stuff. Contrary to above I have had no problems with adequate penetration, even on a shoulder shot. I have used them on deer from almost point blank to a max of 550 yds. Mostly 129 gr .264's and 140 gr .284's. 8ball
 
They are a fairly "soft" bullet that is intended to expand quickly and when pushed at high velocity, they will shed weight. They are very accurate, and I did enjoy their performance. I used them on 4 deer, using the 130gr in a .270 Win.

Shots where between 130 and 510m. They all had exits except on frontal at 510m

Bang flops, with no bullet recovery (.270 Win w/ 140 Grain SST's) - I haven't made any stellar distance shots - the critters where polite enough step out at 120 yards or less.
 
I shot a mtn caribou bull last year with a 165gr SST out of a 300 win mag,worked ok but did come unglued,I wouldn't use it on moose unless velocity was kept around 30/06 levels or less
 
Just shot 6 coyotes last week with them, big damage to the midsections (30-06 150sst)
Seem good. Shot a whitetail last year too, one shot.
Maybe for a moose go with the interbond, same shape and charachteristics as the sst but will stay together better. That being said my dad shot a moose this year with the sst, long ways away with one shot.
I think it matters more where the bullet hits than the type of bullet. Sst's are just dressed up interlocks.
 
Well, my first 5 shots with the SST's were total misses. I blame the bullet, what other reason could there be. And the speed the coyotes were running at. :D

But the first deer I hit with one was a bang flop. And a nice deer at that!

I've never had a problem with SSTs. They're quite accurate out of my hunting rifle, and everything I've shot with them has stayed dead. The only thing to watch out for is the velocity. They are definitely not a premium hunting bullet, and as already mentioned, if they are going too fast, they will disintegrate. I've had good results with my 7mm-08, but with my 7mm WSM, they just shred apart. As long as you're not trying to use them in a magnum calibre, you should have pretty good results.

Of the opinion these are bad for hunting shot 2 deer 1@ 500yd very messy looked like it was hit with a shotgun the other @ 200yd same thing,did seem accurate,better suited for something you don,t want to eat.Try grand slams seem to hold up well. 300wm :wave:
 
I used 165gr sst (Hornady ammo) in my 30-06 last year for hunting.

I shot 6 Mule deer one White tail and 4 coyotes.

All were bang flops, from distances of 115 yrds to 340yrds.

I have no problem reccomending them as I feel their performance was more than adequate.

I used the IL and SST only for the paper. The SST damaged a lot of meat,because blood shock.My best bullet for hunting is the NP.
 
I have been shooting deer with 150gr SST in a 300WM for +5 years. The typical reaction is bang/flop. These bullets will not hold together if asked to drive through heavy bone or large muscle groups. However, I have always waited for a broadside shot and have been very impressed with their terminal performance. Having said that I am in the process of switching to a Barnes 150gr TTSX because I have had to let some good bucks walk as they would not give me the broadside shot.
 
Ive tried them a few times on paper, could never get them to shoot well enough. If I want a bullet like that now I will always go for the original - Nosler Ballistic Tip
 
Well I have used them in my 300 ultra they just exploded the deer was dead but what a mess try the inter bond same bullet but bonded I had better luck with these
 
ive only used them on deer in muzzle loader. with 100 pwd and a 45 cal 250gr sst, it entered the chest and exited the rib cage with minimal expansion, it was a 100yd shot. i am not happy with the cold clean bore grouping. i will not be using them next year. i would stay away from them for muzzleloader anyways.
 
I use sst's in everything ive got from my 270 to my 30-378 and used them on deer bears, moose and elk, From 40 to 500+ yds and I haven't had any issues with them not doing their job..
