Hornady SST

I find SST's grenade inside game, lots of meat loss/damage. Great personal defence or varmint round, sure, but using bonded bullets from now on.

I use the SST's in my 3006 and 308, they do blow up fast if you run them too fast. You may want to try something a bit heavier then 150 for deer, I have seen a lot of lost meat on dear because of fast light bullets exploding as soon as they touch the hair of an animal (or so it seems). I use them on coyotes as well, I run them fast for those critters though.
I have had grouping issues with the SST's as well I think the short bearing surface has a lot to do with it, I am currently trying some A-max's to see if they will group better.

Been using SST to hunt deer for many years. Always great results. Used in 6mm and 308. I have done a front shoulder hit with the 6mm and it damn near tore the leg off at ~100 yards. Left a clean hole right through the bone and kept going. That was a 95gr MV of ~2850. 308 has dropped them just as quickly using 150gr slugs. Definitely my go to for deer.

I use 180 gr sst in my 30-06 for deer and moose with good results. Always passes through when hit behind the shoulder and melts the vitals on its way through.

The SST's are three things for sure...

-Inexpensive
-Accurate
-Fragile

From my time using them and being on here and knowing people that use them, there is about 80% of hunters that won't use them due to their fragile and unpredictable on game performance.

If blowing game apart, wasting meat and having softball size holes in your animal is alright then it is all yours.

I always refer to my last deer shot with an SST out of a 7/08 at about 150-175 yards , mature doe , perfectly placed shot that took out the heart and partial lungs , AND , both loins. That was the last time I used them on game.

For paper absolutely but I don't like being penalized for a well placed shot and I do not like wasting meat.

To me the SST is a target, varmint small game type bullet.

"...damn near tore a leg off..." Not for me.

I use bonded in my hunting projectiles now, not a problem or complaint.

To bring this thread back RE SSTs , would anyone think that at MV of around 2550fps the .30 cal 180gr SST would be a reasonable bullet?

from understanding its high velocity that kills this bullet, high velocity impacts i should say.

what about starting out at 2550fps in terms of the .308 / my 30-06 load with varget?
should not act too poorly like this one would think?

I used a Hornady .308 165 SST loaded in their "Superformance" ammo for my last deer. The range was 165m, I didn't lose much meat but the damage to the internals was incredible and the entire bullet even exited. I'm gonna use a more plain load next time.

I prefer the original interlock in the 308. The 165 work excellent in my 308's. Used mostly on large mule deer bucks and moose. 90% of the time they exit and leave a 2 to 3" hole. I find no noticeable difference between accubonds and interlocks.
