The wife came home from shopping today with a new magazine for me.....yes, believe it.

But,...there's some info in there on the new Hornady Superformance ammo...a 300 Win load pushing a 165 at 3222...now I remember 10 years ago running 168 AMax's thru a 24" 300 Win Mag at over 3250....

what's the deal with this?

Fast

Superformance ammunition is 100 to 200 fps FASTER than any conventional ammunition on the market today, and achieves this performance in EVERY gun, WITHOUT increases in felt recoil, muzzle blast, temperature sensitivity, fouling or loss of accuracy.

Innovative

Superformance is a cutting edge technological advancement in ammunition design that transcends convention and achieves the highest performance of any ammunition on the market today.

Specialized

Superformance uses ultra progressive propellants that take your favorite SST or GMX bullets to levels of performance that are simply unattainable with conventional propellants. In order to get more velocity in the past – shooters have used a brute force approach – large charge weights of a slow burning powder in a larger cartridge case. Ultimately this leads to more recoil and muzzle blast. The Superformance solution is an elegant approach that utilizes specialized powders…at NORMAL charge weights, that impart ALL useable energy to the bullet reducing the ROCKET NOZZLE EFFECT at the muzzle while still increasing velocity!

Versatile

Superformance provides increased performance, and is safe to use in ALL firearms, including semi-autos, lever gun and pump actions.

Increases in rifle performance, no increases in barrel wear and felt recoil, along with superior temperature stability are all realized with Superformance ammunition.

Sounds interesting. I wonder if it lives up to the hype?

Hey guys! Have a look at http://www.hornady.com/ where they list all the calibres that the new SP is loaded for! It has basically replaced all the Light Magnum line with a claimed increase in performence. I will be trying this stuff out as I use the LMs in most of my main rifles(280s and 30-06s)!!

Basically they've found a way to utilize mixed powders and coating to get a powder that almost completely burns and expands within the bore length of the average sporting rifle. Hence, higher velocities. All the efficiency mavens should be ecstatic. - dan

99% of average factory loads burn all the powder well within the first 10" of the bore...

Was at Epps last weekend looking at buying a few boxes of this ammo. Apparently Hornady is very, very far behind on ammo orders. Sale person mention it might be between April and June before the new 2010 ammo comes in. They said Hornady is far behind on orders as Epps only got 10% of what they ordered, the rest Hornady has on back order.

Pretty sad they come out with this new ammo and start all the hype with it, but you won't be able to get till half way thru the year. I wanted to change to it, but I think I may just stick to my Winchester XP3's. I was hoping to save some money with the Hornady ammo, but I'm not going to wait half a year for it come to Canada.

I was asking about it at SAIL Baron here in the 514 the other day. Last year, they only got 8 boxes of Hornady ammo, which is under the 10% that Epps apparently got. What's up with Hornady? Is it a concentrating on America thing, or is the company a freaking non-profit organisation?

I have done some reading on this ammo, as I have a 30-06. I thought it might be nice
to get some flatter performance out further. I wonder if there is something to give up,
such as grouping, and consistancy of the fps, which again would be grouping down range. The only thing I have seen is a video that shows 2 shells being shot from an 06
at 3009 and 3016 fps. Is there any performance data which may be just a wee bit more complete. It will be interesting when the real gun world tests this ammo.
