The Hornady manual lists Varget for .223 rem loads with a bullet weight from 52 gn Vmax and up. Can anybody tell me if Varget can be used for
40 to 50 gn Vmax bullets? Why doesn't Hornady include Varget in these lighter bullets? Thinking about doing some velocity tests with Varget and the lighter weight bullets mentioned, but I'm hesitant without published data.
Cheers.

Did you check on line? Nosler and Hodgdon have all their data available free.

I'm using the Hornady reloading manual 9th edition. Found that data that I needed from the website thanks again guys. (time to find the 10th edition)

Trying to remember, I think it was P&D that had 10th edition on the shelf the other day when I was in there.

I've had good luck with IMR 4198 with lighter projectiles in 223.
I feel that usually if they don't publish data for light bullets but they do for heavier bullets then that powder isn't well suited to the lighter weight projectiles and produces a less than ideal pressure curve or doesn't burn correctly if too light of a bullet is used. If it isn't listed I don't usually go looking for data somewhere else. I do however reference multiple sources for data before starting any new loads.

There are 7 loads for .223 Rem (40g to 63g bullets) for Hodgdon Varget on the Hodgdon retail website here:
https://www.hodgdon.com/varget/
1) select .223 Remington from the -Cartridge (Required)- drop-down menu
2) DO NOT select any bullet weight from the -Bullet Weight- drop-down
3) now click the "GET RELOADING DATA" button and the seven loads will appear...

Please note that this is not the Hodgdon Reloading Data Center. It is Hodgdon's retail website and all possible calibers and bullet weight "recipes" for any given powder are directly accessible on the respective powder description page.

This is perfect when you have a powder and you scratch you head and say "I wonder what other calibers I could use this powder for?"

neat huh?

Varget is too slow for all but the heavy weights in 223. You could dip a 223 case in varget level off the top a seat a 40gr on there and it would be safe. There are much better powders for light weight bullets in the 223
