Been using 17 HMR Hornady 17gr V-max and now see Federal has a 17gr V-max also. My question is.
Is it the same ammo with different names?
Does Federal make ammo for Hornady, and Hornady makes the bullets for Federal?
Anyone have experience with them both, which is better?

They all shoot 1"@100. I have had some shoot better than others, but I feel it's probably more of a batch issue, not brand. Except for winchester ammo, shoots badly. It's funny, when I first got my .17, I had really good luck with CCI, the ones with the gopher with a helmet on. I still have 1 box of those that I won't shoot.

As far as I know the they both use the same projectile. But I could be wrong.
I'm sure it's not the same ammo though. When I had my 93/17r I got better groups with the Hornady than I did the Federal.

shoot them in your rifle and find out….. Mine likes 17gr hornady v-max….. it shoots everything well, but those it shoots extremely well, so its all I use.

I was told they're all basically manufactured at the same place using the same powder and what not. Who knows. I've tried a few different brands of 17 grain and have seen no differences. Now I have a couple boxes of 20 grain hollow point, we'll see how they do. My Marlin seems to like anything it can get and its accurate.

My Cooper prefers Winchester Supreme, over all other loads. The difference is significant, even though the Winchester, Hornady, and Federal loads, all use the same v-max bullet.

Jd, I have not seen that version for 10 years!!! I bet since the lot numbers are likely not the same ( if I could find them) and they would shoot differently.
Stubble, the winchesters that were sold from Saskatoon WSS, were terrible. Some loads hardly went off as the case split almost the full length. I had to dig out the brass with a knife from the chamber, and pull the bolt to make sure it was clear. What is your lot number?

Was this in a savage by chance?
I shoot hornady 17gr in my cz.

I shoot the hornady 20gr in my t-bolt. Was using 17gr which shoot well too when I couldn't find the 20's but they shoot 3-4" higher at 100yds. Found a place to get the 20's now so no more switching for me. Gun also didn't like the Winchesters.

Any of u guys had Winchester 20 grain 17hmr casings split on u and need some love to get out of the rifle after firing I have. I have shot hundreds of rounds through mine with other brands and not one single glitch.

My CZ455 prefers the Hornady rounds over the federal rounds. The only thing that has shot better than the Hornady Vmax was the Winchester supreme, but the 25% price difference of the Supreme over the Vmax in relation to the .05" tighter groups doesn't justify the costs for gopher punching. Maybe if i wanted to get into competitions or something...

I stocked up on 6 cases of winchester 20 grain and cant use it, every other shot the case splits and have to use a screwdriver to get it out.

I tried 2 boxes back when I had a savage 93r17 and so many cases split it was crazy. Sold the savage and bough a 452 will never try winchester in it. Hornady shoots just fine for me.
Also winchester is the only hmr ammo to do this for me. I have had some federal ones with no powder in the case though.

Send it all back to winchester, they will give you Olin gift certificates to replace that ammo. Its a well known defect with some winchester ammo and they take good care of you when you send it in along with split casings. They did that for me.

The newer supreme should be fine. They had a really bad run and it was only the winchester ammo

I was using a Sako Quad…. I even sent the rifle in for inspection, and of course it was fine.
