Im just getting started in precision shooting. I have a Savage 10PC in .223 with a Minox ZA5. Im having trouble finding decent ammo in my area. what i want is Hornady Vmax 55G but no one has it. I can get 55g Zmax... is that comparable and/or decent for a beginner? Im just shooting paper at about 200 yards or so. Im NOT going to get into reloading so im looking for the best factory ammo I can get, but also what I can get locally.

Interesting... its cheaper than regular Vmax... at most places anyway. Ill get some and see how it compares. I figured it was probably the same but wasent sure.

Im NOT going to get into reloading .

I wouldn't expect better than 0.75 MOA groups if that's the case. That said I'd try whatever factory load you can get with a 60 gr flat based bullet. I had excellent results handloading both 60 gr V-Max and 60 gr Sierra HP in both Savage and Remington 1 in 9 twist barrels. Others say any of the match grade ammo suitable for your barrel will be closest to handloading. I've never tried any because I can't justify the cost.

Bottom line is what's best for your rifle will likely be a handload but you may get lucky and get great results with a factory load. I wouldn't expect much better than 1.0 to at best 0.75 MOA though.

As someone said Z-Max = V-Max, they sure look the same on the outside to me.

shoots good in 308. Zmax is the same as the amax, just different tip, like everyone else has said. Shoot it, keep the brass, when you do reload, hornady brass is good brass.
