hot 338 win mag load

can you get a 250 grain sailing at 2800 fps or over safely? or a 225 at over 2950? if you cant thats fine, a standard 338 win still has lots of power for me, just wondering what i can achieve.
 
I shoot out to a mile with my 338 win mag and a 24" barrel. I use 250 smk and rl 19. That being said my moat accurate load gives me an average of 2770. It is above max in most books and brass is only good for about 3 loads. I had one load that was giving over 2800 but it had pressure signs. I won't share my data as it is not safe in all guns but it can be done. There is no real need for it but with my rifle that just happens to be the most accurate load. It does give me about 4200 foot pounds of energy though.
 
If you want a good varmit round use hornady they blow up when the hit a deer even out of the 338 and I have several bullets to prove it.

When I was shooting 225 interbonds I was getting close to 2900. I will have to check my data when I get home to confirm. I am now using 225 barns ttsx at 2850. They pack a punch. For some reason my 338 gives me really high mv and I don't know why.
 
At 72.0 grains of IMR4831 with a 250 grain Nosler Partiction the velocity was 2750. This was a colder weather round and pressure increased when above 10 degrees C.
 
All you can do is start at the beginning and work your way up. Your gun may deliver higher end velocities, it may also never get there. On a 24" barrel, for a 250gr anywhere over 2700 is in decent territory, 2750 is in the upper end. I never bothered with 225's. 210's can hit 2950 range at the upper end, anywhere around the 2900 mark is quite alright. You'll get people telling you about higher velocities than what I have said here, some push the limits, some have longer barrels, some guns are actually inherently faster. And there will be people saying they can't get what I've listed, that could just be because of the gun they happen to have, it won't do it.
When I picked mine up new in 1990, I bought Federal Premium 250 Noslers to blast off and sight it in, only got 2440 out of them. Same bullet got to 2750 in that gun. They were advertised on the box at 2660. I've been using RL19 on the 210's and H4831 on the 250's.
 
I am shooting 225 gr TTSX due to their BC .514 ( which is very good for monolithic hunting bullet) over RL 19 and they do chronographed at 2860.

TTSX for hunting and 225 Hornady SST for plinking.

I do my load development with SST then buck of couple of grains with powder and do Barnes.
