is it ok to blue the inside of the barrel or I should plug the bore?

I'm using a stuff call Black magic ( industrial stuff, caustic soda.....and many more.)

and if I need to plug what should I use. the stuff is at 300F....

thank you.

Seb

No dont plug. The barrel will heat up with the air in it and blow the plugs out. Just give the barrel a good cleaning on the inside and dunk it. Clean it because the copper will taint the salts.
Good luck its lots O fun. Don't forget the safety gear you will get some on you.

Where did you get your bluing stuff? I'm in the Edmonton area too and will have some pieces needing hot bluing after I'm sone restoring and poilshing.

thanks for your help Sdeering .

and for Jason, I'm doing the blueing at my workplace I don't have the stuff at home.

Go to your industrial chemical supplier. I purchased my sodium hydroxide in Red Deer no problems getting it. As for the sodium nitrate. I think they could get it there as well. The stuff I had was from a pharmacist.
Univar had the sodium hydroxide.

"...the air in it and blow the plugs out..." No it won't. Lightly tap a cast bullet into the muzzle, just enough to keep it there and put a case with a spent primer in the chamber. Mind you, bluing won't hurt the barrel. Neither does any other finish. Had my .243 black phosphated long ago. Didn't have the cast bullet or anything else that'd fit. The inside got done too. Makes no difference. And bluing adds nothing to the dimensions.
"...doing the bluing at my workplace..." The quality of a bluing job depends entirely on the prep polishing. A buffing wheel in a bench grinder with jeweller's rouge works well.

I can tell you first hand the plugs will come out! When bluing in school some dummy plugged his barrels unknownst to me and when walking by the tanks got a sweet chemical burn. Keep straight vinegar nearby it will neutralize the chemical. Safety first is right.
