My Beretta's Turkish cousin come over today. Have to say prettier than expected!

I'm impressed with the quality, fit and finish is quite good. The trigger is not as good as of my Beretta, which does have a D spring installed, but its quite decent esp in single action (perhaps even would be equal to 92FS if it had a lighter mainspring).

Also surprisingly liking the feel of the finger groves; they fit me perfectly, in fact when holding it if I didn't know about them I wouldn't know they were there (I wear Large size gloves, but my hands certainly aren't bear paws). Thin plastic grips make the Girsan feel noticeably smaller than my Beretta that wears aluminum grips.

As much as I love the full size Beretta 92 and have for years, I also like the balance and size of the compact Girsan model (which is based on Beretta 92 Centurion models that have been discontinues for years). IMO if this design was invented today the "compact" would be considered a full size and the full size model be somewhat of a ling slide/competition/tactical model at 4.9".

First thing I tried was to change the uppers and it was a no go. Beretta mag did fit in the Girsan but wouldn't hold the slide back and the way it locks in was a little off.

To those tho wonder so what are the differences between the Beretta 92FS and Girsan Yavuz 16 Compact are: Obviously the slide and barrel length (4.9" vs 4.3" barrels), finger groves on the front strap, shape of the trigger guard, angle and shape of slide serrations. Also internally Girsan is based on an older 92F model so it doesn't have an oversized hammer pin and the locking block is an older design. That's all I can tell for now.

All in all initial impressions are very positive, for what they go for they're a great deal. Tomorrow I'll take it to range and see how it does and will post an update then.

Here are some crappy cellphone pics:

IM_Lugger You are ahead of my by a week or so. Mine is in the mail and should arrive by next Friday. It wil be interesting to compare results. Have you tried more than one Beretta mag? I was hoping they would function 100% in the Girsan including holding the slide back. The mags are both made by Mecgar in Italy.

CraigNConner - Hummm Jam a matic doesn't sound consistent to what I have read and heard about the guns. Hope you are wrong or your friends gun is an exception. The Turks are not known to produce junk.

I have not closely inspected the differences but on the mags it says made by MacGar for Girsan, so I dont think they're 100% identical in every way. but I'll make sure to try Beretta mags when I hit the range shortly.

I also dont anticipate have any reliability issues with it. 92 design is extremely reliable.

I think the Beretta mags are likely made by MecGar as well. I could be wrong but the company does most of the major European gun mags. Good luck and I look forward to your report. Are you using reloads or factory?

I haven't bought factory 9mm ammo in a long time... I started reloading when 9mm ammo was about $9 a box so definitely not paying double that which is what they sell for today. Never had any issues with my loads (6gr of Power Pistol behind 124gr Aim plated bullet) if the gun jams its not the ammo its the gun ;)

Did he lube it? My Girsan is well built and ultra reliable when lubed properly.

Edit: MecGar mags work 100% in my Girsan and Beretta's. I prefer them as they are more tapered than factory Beretta mags which help a bit with speed reloads.

I concur with Clobbo.
The only time my 92 FS failed was when I took it out of the safe and straight to the range after not touching it for 2 years. Once I lubed the rails, it worked 100%.
92Fs don't fail on feeding due to the straight in loading.

One of the mags that came with my Girsan says Mec Gar for Girsan but the other just says Mec Gar M9.

I don't think mines ever jammed or caused any trouble.

Well let me tell you Beretta mags DO NOT work in Girsan. At least the silver ones dont Beretta factory mags don't. After the last shot with that magazine he gun seized up; slide wouldn't close all the way and I couldn't open the mag. Now that I'm home looks like the mag follower got hung up on the slide stop. Edit: just got it removed. Never again lol.

I tried Pro Mag Beretta mag and it worked ok. But do not use factory Beretta mags. Sounds like macgar mags work judging by other reports.

As for the range report: I got thru 100 rounds before the mag issue happened. No stoppages of any kind but I didn't expect any either. Just like the Beretta, the Girsan is a smooth shooting gun with little recoil. I enjoyed shooting it, accuracy was pretty good too when I was doing my job. To be honest I expected it to be rather mah (since I have the 92FS INOX) figured I'll try it and list it but I think I'll keep this one.

Hi

Well mine came today. I have the same gun only with a rail. I ran across a youtube video that deals with the Beretta Mags not working. The fellow says to glue a crdit card thick piece onto the left grip just where the slide stop lever is. Apparently the slide stop has just enough room to be pushed outward thus preventing the Beretta mags from locking back the slide. I just held the gun and put pressure inward on the slide stop and racked the slide and the slide did indeed catch using the Beretta mag. I am off to the range and wil post back onto your thread my results.

I actually like the look of your gun without the rail. Looks ###y! Mine looks more like a boxer.

I, like you, am impressed with the fit and finish. Ipaid $450 for mine delivered which I thought was a good deal. The fellow I bought it from is a straight up fellow from Sudbury who told me he had not put many rounds through it. The gun looks virtually unused.

Any idea where one can get a decent inexpensive holster for the gun?

If I like this one I may go for the FS Girsan.

Congrats man! looking forward to your report.

Personally I'm not a fan of rails on Berettas and copies most handguns in general. Dont mind them on glocks because they looks very subtle.

Be careful with Beretta factory mags tho. It was a huge pain in the ass getting it freed from the gun...

I haven't shopped for 92 design holsters in a while, but would imagine any railed Beretta centurion and compact holsters would fit the girsan.

My mags are the black versions made by mecgar and stamped Beretta. I will be careful. Today I will be just using Girsan mags. I concur about the rails. I'll live with them on this gun. If I get the FS though it won;t come with the rails for sure. What the heck I can always wear my real tree jacket, wear my ball cap backwards and be cool with my gat in my pocket at the range. LOL

Just got back from the range. Went through about 90 rounds. It didn't take more than 2 mags to get used to the trigger. I shoot a lot of revolver so the transition was fairly easy. The DA pull feels like it is around 10# with the SA at or under 5#'s which is not bad for a Self Defense gun.

The sights on mine were bang on at 10 yards. I didn't go beyond that because I just wanted to get used to the trigger. Shooting rapidly I could hold all the rounds inside five inches without much effort. Could be I may run it at our next IDPA match.

Recoil seemed to come straight back into the hand. Muzzle rise was about as controlled as I can control muzzle rise. The gun is all steel which helps reduce felt recoil.

The gun looks like it will find a place in my rotation. I would like to try a lighter main spring to lesson the trigger pull a tad. Other than that the gun is solid and is good value. If you are looking for a well made 9MM pistol under $600 new and under $500 used go for it. I am glad I did. Maybe there will be a FS Girsan floating around later this fall with my name on it....maybe.

I intend to tape then likely glue a piece of credit card think material to the left grip so it is placed directly under the slide stop lever to see if I can get the all black Beretta mags to hold the slide back. I didn't try using the Beretta mags on this trip as I really just wanted to test out the trigger and sights.

The gun functioned flawlessly as I would expect. The Turks have been making firearms since Mohammad was a youngster so be assured the quality is there as is the fit and finish. I will now go out and source a holster.

Sounds like a similar experience as mine; I agree with a straight back recoil with super muzzle rise and shooing bang on to the point of aim at 10mm. (Berettas tend to shoot a little low and maybe due to the smooth grip I have on the 92FS, but I think it has more flip, but I didn't shot them at the same range visit.)

I have had mine for almost a year, it functions perfectly, but as mentioned, Beretta mags are a bit of a problem. I have two Mecgar mags, no issues. I also have two Beretta mags, one works just fine the other doesn't.
Considering I always wanted a 92, this was an inexpensive way to indulge this desire. The Girsan fits the Beretta holster, which I already had, so for me no complaints.

I'll see if I can fid that youtube video on the solve for the Beretta mags, if the problem you are having is the mag not causing the side to stay back after the last round. Note this deals with the Mecgar black mags.

EDIT: Here is the video:

ps I tried his fix and it didn't work with my Beretta mags. They seem to function well enough but will not hold the slide back after the last round. For IDPA I will use the Beretta mags for my Barney and third mag. That way holding the slide back on the last round will not affect my shooting.
