Hey guys! I saw a concept that really appealed to me and I wanted to check with fellow CGN to learn more about them.

Hammock hot tents! They are basically a tent that has no poles. You setup a static line between two trees and drape the tent over that line so it serves as a support along the ridge of the roof of the tent. Walls are staked and guy-lined.

Some of them have a chimney hole too for a lightweight stove for use on colder nights.

I really think the concept sounds amazing.

I am having a hard time finding models online though.

I have no intentions of using one with a hammock, but would be awesome with camping cots. Im thinking a 12x12 or 8x14 could be nice.

Anyone ever used one or has seen ones?
Cheers!
David

A lot of people just buy the “stove jacks” and install them on a tent or tarp of their choice. Some companies offer the option to install one for you. Lots of videos on youtube of hot tenting in various setups.

New concept...wow.... we started using outfitter tents with rope center support back in the fifties, just threw the last one out couple years ago (wasnt worth patching anymore...and the wife will only use a "tin tent" now).

I’ve used a good ratchet strap zip tied to the loops as the ridge pole for a wall tent, easy peasy. Finding two well spaced trees with good ground between them, surprisingly difficult. I hunt flat forested country.

Well...I never said it was a NEW concept. Just that it.looked cool. So from the responses...I would think that there arent that many tents designed around that idea.

Ill keep an eye out.

A friend built his own hot tent but as a ground based tent, not a hammock. He modified a Sierra Designs Origami and added a small titanium stove and chimney, of his own design. Great setup and I have been watching the forums and kijiji for an Origami tarp ever since.

A forum i use to belong to had a few guys using a set up like that! Most hammock companies that makes tarps usually sell a winter tarp they call, you can also look at rip stop by the roll they may have some pictures!

No better hot tent for an *extended* stay that a canvas tent, especially with an internal frame.
That being said a lot of people here are converting the single or double Eskimo brand insulated fishing tents for one/ two night outings. Install a stove jack, wood stove and you are GTG. They are lighter and easier to dry out after the fact so it makes them ideal for short outings.

For outfitters canvas tents and pack animals, the stoves make sense. I had one in t a lightweight tipi, no worth the trouble. You end up wasting time cutting wood and feeding a stove (that burns out too quickly) compared to just be hunting. I just simply made the switch to a bigger sleeping bag for added warmth to offset the stove weight. Get in from hunting, eat dinner, dive into sleeping bag and go to bed.

You can get a little screwed no matter what you plan to use. One fly in moose hunt we ended up sleeping under our tarp because the shield rock would not provide an adequate spot for my kifaru tipi tent. I’ve also set out with my hammock and struggled to find trees in a suitable location for the hammock and tarp.

Anyways, I have never heard of anyone using a stove in a hammock. Sounds like a fantastic way to light yourself on fire though lol. There’s so much movement in a hammock it’s just hard to picture for me.
