Hot water rust blueing

Anybody try hot water rust blueing in thier home or garage? I'm thinking of giveing it a try. Any tips or tricks?

If you are refering to the "Belgian Blue" , I have used it with moderate sucess.
It seems to depend on the steel of the gun. If you have a tank to heat water you may be happier trying the regular rust blue if you can get some of the bluing solution.
Good luck!!!

I did a swede 96 last year and got a beautiful black finish. 15 coats (apply chemical boil card repeat), after polishing the steel. The better the polishing the better the finish.

Pilkington's Classic American Rust Blue is the way to go. MUCH faster than Belgian Blue. I did a P17 and a complete redo of a rusty K-38, using up about a third of the bottle, 5 or 6 cycles did the job.

I did the slow rust blue on a Savage 1895 DOM 1902. Worked great. Follow Mauser98's instructions. He knows of what he speaks. Beautiful finish, time intensive, but easy, safe chemicals. The carbon content of the steel is the biggest issue. Hi carbon steels blue best. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

There was a member here many years ago that sold a rust bluing compound and a great set of instructions.

It works really well, but it does take a lot of time.
