Hi,
I don't reload (yet)
I have read on this site that factory 45-70 is loaded kind of "light" ( for the older guns that can't/shouldn't handle the hotter loads?)
Is there ammo companies that make a "hotter" load?
And can you buy it in Canada?:sniper:yingyang:
Thanks

There are several U.S. companies loading .45-70 ammo for modern rifles. Garrett's for one. Not cheap. $60US per 20 and way up($185 U.S. per 20 for 500 gr. Speer bullets ammo). No international sales though.
Cor-Bon is another. Don't know who or if anybody carries either up here.

I know this doesn't help you, but that is why Marlin came out with their 450 Marlin cartridge. It is basically a 45-70 loaded up to the max that a lever gun will handle (43,500 psi), a high pressure cartridge for modern rifles. It has a belt so it won't fit in a 45-70.

My petload for the 45-70 is 49.5 grains of IMR 4198 under a 300 grain jacketed hollow point with a Federal 210 large primer. Comes out of my guide gun like a 125+ year old missle. If it were used in an older rifle, like say a "trapdoor" it could possibly make splinters out of it! If you do decide to reload for the 45-70 (or any cartridge for that matter) work the load up slowly and look for the signs of excessive pressure. As you stated: you don't reload yet but to get the most out of the 45-70, I suspect your going to have to or find someone you trust to reload for you. Cheers.
