Hottest .44 magnum load in country?

Thanks to the members here I have found a good deal on target ammo to feed my future .44mag, now I am in need of your help again.

I am looking for a full power wilderness defense type round. What I would like to get is Mike McNett's 320gr WFN rounds but I am not so sure they are approved for import.

I have searched my local shops but it all seems to be 240gr or so, nothing real heavy. I have also checked several online shops in Canada, but nothing that seems overly full power.

Any leads? I won't be setup for reloading for at least a year, so that is not yet an option.

Any custom reloaders in Canada that could/would work up a top power load?

Double-Tap's numbers are usually an outright lie. Certainly true of all the 10mm and .357 I ran over a chrony. You could try finding someone who will let you use their machine...? Otherwise you could have your favourite shop bring in some Hornady. It should be the hottest ammo approved for sale in Canada.

Hornady is good stuff. 240 gr XTP or 225 gr FTX should be easy to find. What firearm are these for? If it's a marlin lever keep the projectile under 300 gr. (1:34" twist) Hornady also has a 265 gr XTP for reloading, not sure about factory ammo though.

My plan is to reload, just don't have the finances to do it yet. I also don't know any reloaders here in Grande Prairie AB to load my own on their machines.

As to the gun, it will be a rossi ranch hand once they are in country.

The hornady jhp would be sufficient for bear defense? I thought I would need some form of hardcast flatter projectile.

Hornady makes two 265 grain .430" projectiles, an Interlock softpoint and a FTX plastic tip. The FTX plastic tip is meant for the .444 Marlin and has a very long OAL when loaded in a .44 magnum case. It is definitely too long for my Ruger 77/44 magazine, probably too long for a Marlin lever but might work in a revolver. FWIW, the 225 grain FTX is pretty good factory ammo but Hornady recommends .44 magnum cases be trimmed to a shorter length when using the FTX bullet.

With a maximum load of H110 I'm getting 1,650+fps with the 265 grain Hornady Interlock and the 270 grain Speer Deep Curl/Gold Dot from an 18.5" barrel. I prefer the 265/270 bullets to the 300 grain Hornady XTP hollowpoint. With the 300 grainers there is too little room for powder so velocities drop off compared to the 265/270.

Hornady does make factory ammo with the 300 grain XTP bullet but I have yet to see it in Canada. I'd buy some if it were available.

Old thread I know. I want the same thing. Garret makes a big nasty old bullet with a flat nose and some big penetration numbers. I need me some of these. If anybody knows where to get me some, I will smile.

The hottest factory load is Fiocchi 200 gr Extrema HP, out of my 77-44 on the chrony it average 2225 fps, never shot a load that hot before and very accurate to, Canada Ammo have them... JP.

The hottest factory loads will be hard to find in Canada because not alot are used here as handgun hunting is not allowed. Handloading would be the best option using LBT designed 325 gr or so WFN bullets, pref. gas checked, and heavy charges of H-110 powder.
