How accurate are you with rifled slugs and bead sight only?

I've been shooting the Federal reduced recoil slugs in a 12 gauge Parker Brothers side by side. The 1350 fps would be enough for deer at the ranges that I could shoot the slugs accurately enough with just the bead sight. I tried a few different Parkers that had the forcing cone lengthened with mixed results. One was actually quite accurate at forty yards, especially with the full choke left barrel. It would hit about 2 inches right at that distance. The modified right barrel was about 4" out at 7 o'clock. The concave rib makes it easier to line up the bead than a plain barrel.

One time I took a 30 yard shot at a Campbells condensed soup can and hit it square in the middle. That was kinda lucky, however. Original DA Grizzly w/front bead.

...I have an 870 with a 14" Dlask barrel and no rear sight and I can hit within a the big orange "X" on a standard sight-in target at 50 yards consistently. I'm figuring that's about a 10" diameter circle.I practice regularly with slugs out to 100 yards and I know that if I had to take a big game animal in a survival situation with my shotgun I am confident I could score a vital hit [within a 14" diameter circle] at that distance almost everytime.

The key is to buy the 15 packs of 2 3/4" slugs at Canadian tire and just go out and practice. You will be amazed at how well you will be able to reference your front sight after you can actually see where the slug is hitting.

...BTW my Dlask barrel has a post type front sight not a bead, but FWIW I used to get similar results with slugs from my 1300 Defender using just the front bead.

Practice and Enjoy,

I agree. My accuracy is about the same as yours with my 870 Express Magnum and just a bead front sight. I might mess around with some "fancy" sights in the future but I am happy right now.

Enough to consistently put a slug in an 8" circle every time at 100 yards. Just enough for hunting. If I need precision I use something else.

..very nice :) Is that with just the front bead? How's your shotgun set-up? What make/action?

I have a Norinco HP9-1.
Most of the time I can get 3 shot groups that cloverleaf and the other two are at about 1.25" away. But in most cases they are at a max 1.25" apart, center to center.

Don't know with bead sight but with Wilson Combat Ghostring sight setup, I mostly make a ragged hole in the center at 25 meters with most slugs.
I like that. I don't need more range for what I call my "Outhouse Broom".
This one or my S&W Police Folder are always with me on camping trips.
PP.

I have Wilson Trac-Locs on my 14" HP9-1 and I am WAY more accurate with them than the old bead.

I can hit 600ml pop bottles at 50 yards 9 times out of 10 with slugs.

+1 on the Trak-Loks. I have them on my 870mm; I shot a couple of sub-8" groups with it back in October. I expect I might have done better had it not been towards the end of a long afternoon of shooting sabots followed by sixty-odd rifled and Foster slugs, and I was starting to get a little tenderized :).

Not accurate, but lucky ONCE. I hit the steel arm holding up a 1/2'' iron plate (14'' x 12'') from 200....(ish) yards ON MY FIRST TRY...technically i was aiming for the plate....then missed (everything) the next nine shots completely. It's tough, humiliating, and expensive to make contact with only a bead and a short barrel. (For me anyways.)
