Whats cracking guys !

I now have a dilema and Can't make up my mind. I sold one of my hunting rifle because I need a real dedicated target rifle, Sick and tired of waiting all day long for barrel to cool down after 3 shot .I need Something that will give me lots of fun up to 200M, and will punch clover leaf if I want to.

I was gonna buy a 308 bolt action with a bull barrel, but then I got haunted again with the AR's. I have around $1500 to spend.

I dont mind the 223 , I only wanted 308 so I could alway use it for hunting if I wanted to, but with the AR it' s different story in Canada

how accurate Is a AR on a bench up to 200M ?
Is more fun to shoot then a Target rifle ?
Will it give good groups or I will alway think of a bolt action bull barrel ?
I reload and enjoy playing with loads

With $1500 am I better off building one or buying complete
I know how to use my hands to put parts together

last day at the range I saw a guy with a AR , I asked him a couple question he told me to only buy these brand , LMT DPMS SABRE COLT.
and I that I should stay away from Bushmaster Armalite and Norinco

I see more Bull barrel at the Range then AR but when I see stop shooting for a while and go watch it for a while. Only at this moment I like waiting on my barrel to cool down :D

Hey,

LMT DPMS SABRE COLT are good. As are Bushmaster & Armalite. Sabre Defense also offer some options that are interesting. The same company owns Remington. DPMS and Bushmaster.

It you like 308, buy an AR that shoots 308. I have a Remington R-25 which IS a DPMS rifle. Very good. With quality match ammo, all holes touching at 100 yards, so would still be great out to 200 at least (and I suck at precision rifle shooting).

I intend to hunt with mine in the US one day as well.

You can find a nice AR for 1500 before taxes, and before any optics.

You'll end up getting both (at least I did). I have a sub moa bolt target rifle and a "cost effecient" franken-ar to run and gun with for fun.

From my very limited noob experience I would think it would be easier to get a bolt rifle and optic to do that kind of work in that price range than an AR. But like I said, I'm new to the black arts and could be totally wrong. Just seems like 1500 gets you into the AR door and submoa accuracy comes later on the visa bill.

Rack grade military AR15 variants with 20" barrels are supposed to be able to shoot 2.5 MOA. That said, my stock Colt Hbar sporter easily shoots 1 MOA from prone with commercial 55gr ammo (not specialized reloads).

You should have no problem shooting cloverleafs at 200m with a customized AR15 and custom reloaded ammo, but it might cost more than $1500.

Check if your local range allows restricted firearms to be shot a 200m and even 100m, because some ranges in Quebec does not allow shooting restricted above handguns reach. My club does not allow it.

WTF? You can't use a rifle on a rifle range? Only in Quebec I guess...

Your budget will go further towards accuracy with a bolt action rifle and it will double for hunting duty. AR's are fun, but a $1500 bolt action rig (rifle and scope) will typicaly blow away a $1500 AR-15 (not including a scope) in the accuracy department. Maybe when you spend $3000 on an AR-15, then a scope, riser, rings and custom load your ammunition or pay $38 a box for it, you will come close to match what an $800.00 223 or 308 bolt action rifle can achieve.

So if I got this right AR and Accuracy will cost me 3K

I guess it's gonna be a bolt action.
My problem is that I dont like shooting when the bullets dont go where I aim

On the other hand I love the AR look and they look like a blast to shoot, but this could temporary trip, hard to know without actually try it.

This bring me back to square 1 , get the target rifle or a filmsy Norinco CQ

Stag Arms Model 6.
.5 moa guarantee. IE bull barrel, with two stage trigger. This is the best out of the box accuracy AR-15 rifle you can get for the price (about $1600). Arms East here sells them.

Rock River is another option. I'm not sure of the price. I believe Questar sells them.

Check out ATRS web site. They just posted some bolt guns that are in that price range,as well as custom AR heavy barrel uppers. My 20" Hbar will do less tha 1" at 100m.Plus i have a 1/7 twist so i can shoot the 77 grain match amo.

AR's are roughly a 1MOA rifle. As mentioned, you can get an AR out of the box that will shoot nice groups with a modest scope on it for about 2k.

If you want a serious tac driver, maybe a rem 700 in .223? :)

If I go with a bolt action it will be a 308.
Reloading .223 is not fun and .308 can always be use for moose hunting.

Im gonna have to take a look at the Stag arms

my bushmaster varminter rifle with the 24" fluted barrel will shoot less than .5moa from a rest. With factory ammo, no mods. It has shot some groups less than 1" at 300yards. I dont expect to do any better than that with my reloads, but it will be fun trying.

I own a CQ5.56. Its made by Norinco but it dosnt have the usual "made in China" or "Norinco" markings on it.Only the CQ5.56 and serial wich I tought was kinda weird but anyway...shot 2000 times without any failure.Im not a Norc fan but gotta admit that the pricing and reliability is unbeatable.
I bought this rifle because I was on a budget.Paid 1000$ tx.+ship. included with extra picatinny quad rail.:)
