How accurate is your 858 with irons?

I had my 858 out at the range today and I was very disappointed with the groupings I was getting. I was shooting with iron sights at 50 yards and I was getting holes all over the paper. it was almost like I was not aiming at any specific point on the paper. I bought this gun used off somebody who did not clean it properly after shooting corrosive ammo from it. I have put i a lot of time and elbow grease trying to 'restore' this rifle and these showings today were quite demoralizing.

In my defense though - the target I was using had a very small colored area to shoot at, and I could barely even see it past the front post of the iron sight. I tried shooting it at a distance where I could actually see the cross hairs on the target (15M) and I was getting roughly 1" groupings. Nothing to brag about, but maybe, just maybe, the problem is with my shooting skills(or lack there of) instead of the rifle? haha

So to my fellow 858 owners out there, what sort of groups can you get using just iron sights? I am not sure if I should just sell this gun for parts and start over with a new one or maybe I can get better accuracy from it eventually with more practice. This is my second time shooting this gun.

I was shooting good Hornady ammo from her as well.

Thanks!

I was getting about 4 inches at 100 yards with irons with an 858. Russian surplus shot best. Shooting irons well different then shooting a scoped rifle. I do not aim at a bullseye when shooting with irons. I aim at the whole target and estimate where the middle is. I would suggest you staple 4 sheets of white typing paper on the target at 100 yards and aim in the middle of it. Put your front sight in the middle of your rear sight with an equal amount of white target on each side and squeeze the trigger. Humans are good at finding symmetry.

I don't shoot that well with any rifle with irons anymore, I blame my eyes... both sights aren't in proper focus like they used to be.

I have better results with a peep sight (AR15 style). I had a rear peep installed on my old 858 I used to have. It went with the gun though.

I get reasonably decent accuracy from mine. Haven't really benched it and sighted it in on paper, but I can hit the 300 yard turkey gong at our range pretty regular. I have a plain steel barrel, not chromed.
The cz858/vz58 are designed to be minute of man at reasonable distance...

I can hit steel gongs consistently at 100 yards. Not saying its accurate, but accurate enough for me and what I want to do with the gun, Its a plinker for me, nothing more.

Hits steel plates out to 250 at the range. Minute of bad guy is what it was designed for and thats what it delivers.

The Cz858 isn't a paper puncher, and using it as such might be why you are disappointed.

I am just not sure if the rust down the barrel and my persistent cleaning may have removed too much material in the bore and caused a noticeable decline inaccuracy. or if this is normal accuracy.

Palm size groups at 100m approx 4"

I have an orange 12x12 square gong that gets hit all the time at 200m and regularly at 300m.

For me, chinese corrosive copper wash gives me the best result. Have someone or more to try it to see if its the gun or you. A gun rest could be good for that too

yeah maybe I was just shooting it poorly. I will try again and report the results. Thanks guys for all the feedback on this issue!

I hit my 9"x9" steel plate all day long at 125 yards with iron sights... with Russian surplus ammo... It does what I expect it to do. 125 yards is about the limit of my eyes.

3 to 4 MOA using most ammo brands for me.
2 to 3 MOA using Sellier & Bellot hunting ammo.

I think my Czech gun prefers Czech ammo, what a bigot she is! LOL

I have used it out to 500 yards hitting 12x12 plates with know decent surplus ammo.

I dont even shoot mine at 100 anymore, 200+ yards all day shooting at steel.

About 3.5-4 moa at 100 yards with no rest and irons. All 7.62 guns seem to be the same even bolt actions. Never managed to get better then 3.5 ish.

7.62x39 groups wide it seems regaurdless of firearm your using. I really do blame the caliber, never understood why it cant group sub moa like .223 in anything at 100 yards.

It dose have good knockdown power tho, better then .223. If you want accuracy you shoulda gone with .223, but for utilatarian use i would take 7.62x39.
