How Agressive

When hunting, unless the gun gets soaked, or dropped in the muck, I rarely clean it. Even deer hunting for two weeks. It's thoroughly cleaned both before, and after the hunt, usually without a brush, but if I need one, it will be bronze, or nylon, with a bore guide.

Nylon brush, or bore-snake, good old boiling water for the corrosive surplus ammo, wipe out (when I can find it), and G96 or Ballistol to clean and lube.

And methinks who ever gave you advice on cleaning your .223 with steel, and that many times needs a kick in the nads.

For all you guys who recommend Wipe-Out, let me tell you that I was the most skeptical person about that stuff. I'm a competitive shooter, and for years I've cleaned systematically with the conventional solvents like Hoppes and Sweet's, and I've used bronze brushes and patches only. This year, at the annual 2-day gun show, I decided to try this Wipe-Out stuff... and damned if it didn't remove crap from barrels that I thought were spotless from cleaning with the old method.

Then I turned it on a sporterized Lee-Enfield, that had taken me hours of conventional cleaning, and I actually needed two applications of the stuff, with blue goo pouring out of my barrel.

To say I am a convert would be an understatement! I simply can't believe this stuff. So far, I'd say it is one of the few things that actually does live up to the hype.

I use a brass bore brush soaked in Hoppes #9 once then use patches in solvent until clean then a wipe through a couple of times with a dry patch then a light coat with oil. Always worked no problems. Biggest problem I see is guys who don't keep the cleaning rod shaft away from the muzzle sides. Changed over to a brass cleaning rod years ago as well, no more aluminum. Started using Ballistol on a buddies recommendation recently. Works great at getting the crud out and also a great lube and protectant!! Just my two cents.

Generally how often do you guys clean. I'm not talking about benchrest precision here, just average hunting.

I ahve a 223 wssm, I shot a box out of it and gave it a run with a little sovent and a few patches and it was nice and clean.
Then I had some guy tell me that with these guns, or any fast burners, you need to use a good steel brush constantly. Never fire more than 3 rounds with out doing it!

I have never been that regimental, and feel that would defeat the purpose that I bought my rifle for.

Seems to me that you just answered your own question. I think that the guy who told you that must be wanting to sell you either new barrels or new guns.
