Hi guys, please help

I recently got my first surplus from a store. they advertised 9.5/10 new condition

I was very excited about it until yesterday I cleaned grease out from its bore. Looks like there is a crack in it.

So this is my first surplus and I am not sure how bad is it? Do you guys think it is safe to shoot?

Can you return it? I have surplus rifles with some pitting but I would be unsure about that one too...

Pitting is one thing on a surplus rifle, especially a Mosin - but a crack is another animal all together. I can’t tell from the pictures if it’s a crack or something else, but if it was advertised as a “9.5/10” condition wise I’d be returning it either way. IF it’s a crack it’s not something I’d even remotely consider firing.

Also check to make sure it isn’t a hair or piece of lint / cloth etc first.

Yes - you "cleaned the grease out", but that's only step one of several. Do a thorough cleaning and have another look. If you already have, a possible crack aside, that's at best "dark with strong rifling".

In fairness to the vendor, they can't sell a gun "still in the grease" and know with certainty the quality of each barrel. The other side of that is that if it's a crack, it's not a dispute about bore quality - it's damaged and not shootable.

Hi Andy

I did a thorough cleaning. that is a crack.

I am so sad that my first surplus is not safe to shoot : (

Just a question. How the heck do you get a crack in the barrel???? Asking for my education, not questioning the OP's observation.

Following, id love to hear what the dealer does

Me as well. 9.5/10 new condition seems like a really poor description for any mosin still in the grease.

Can you see the crack on the outside of the barrel at all? Im assuming no?

ziny can you see the crack on the outside at all?

I seriously doubt the rifle is unsafe to shoot.

I have not doubt that the crack is going to cause some serious fouling issues.

That crack is close to the muzzle, from what I can see in your pics.

The highest pressure spike will occur within a few inches of the bullet entering the leade. That's why the chamber area and a bit just after it are thicker.

If you are a as concerned as you seem to be, contact the seller. Likely you won't get much satisfaction. Most of the sellers have a caveat about surplus firearms and that they can't be responsible for their condition.

Time is money, and it takes time to clean the grease out of those bores. There's no way for them to recover the cost of cleaning the rifle, without passing it onto the customer.

If that were my rifle, I would shoot it, without fear.

Another Tenda special, lol.

I also bought one of those and the bore is very good to excellent after cleaning/scrubbing. But is was dirty. How did you clean it? It doesn't look as if it has been cleaned properly to be honest. I had rifles with very bad looking bore and they all cleaned up using the proper stuff.

Actually quite happy, got a 1922 Izzy with matching numbers including bayo but it is not 9.5/10.

That is my question , as well , scrub with a bronze brush and cleaner? A xray would be handy, but not something most shops have these days.
If it is close , a trade would be the simplest.
