How big is this GRIZZLY?

Yes, it was apparantly shot by fish cops by the creek.

Certainly well placed for their purposes; stop the bear ASAP!!

I swear, those park bears are far more dangerous than regular 'bush' bears, because of their habituation to people, and how stupid people act around them.

Time for a bear story.

I have a buddy who was with the RCMP (now retired), and one of the few guys who actually had both Banff and Jasper postings in his career.

He told me of a time when he was on the Parkway, and came across a tourist 'animal jam'...cars lined up for half a mile. He passed to the head of the lineup to see Mrs. Tourist with a loaf of bread and a camera, feeding a grizzly out the window of the camper truck, while Mr. Tourist was sneaking around the camper truck with Baby Tourist in his arms....when Corporal Bud says "WTF ARE YOU DOING!?!?!", Mr. Tourist responds indignantly "I'm going to put Baby Tourist on the bears back, so Mrs. Tourist can get a picture!" The dumb #### was convinced the bears were tame, and placed there for photo ops, and was highly pissed off that Cpl. Bud ran his ass right out of there....

I used to give tours on that highway 15 or 20 years ago. Some pretty big critters there alright. I wish somebody would have got out and posed beside this guy for the pic to help judge the size.

One year the weather had done something unusual and killed lots of vegetation high up, so we had lots more activity down lower around the Lake Louise area. One memorable trip had 3 adult grizzlies sitting on their rumps at the side of the highway eating berries, looked like people at a picnic.

This of course led to a huge bear jam with highway traffic backed up for miles. I had a vanload of japanese tourists that wanted to get out and go take pictures next to them. They got quite upset that I wouldn't allow them to do it.

I guess the bears looked so peaceful and unconcerned about all the people, and it was a national park, so they seemed to think it was tame animals like some sort of petting zoo. Now we had no shortage of tourists, and the bears gotta eat too, but I wouldn't let them get out because they hadn't paid me yet. :D

Tumbleweed - When I was in the area that story was a local legend. We always figured it was fabricated like some of the internet stories we get now. The version I heard of that one had her spreading peanut butter on the bread she was feeding him.

Only if you promise to post video of a 624+ pound grizz eating it out of your hand.

Exactly what i was thinking ... anyone who can tell that close by looking at it aught to be the bait. Call out when a goodly sized one shows up, will ya?!? :D

Average polar bear
SIZE:
Males are 8 to 11 feet long and weigh 500 to 1,100 pounds but can reach as much as 1,500 pounds. Females are smaller, measuring 6 to 8 feet long, and weigh from 350 to 600 pounds, occasionally reaching 700 pounds.

so even being used to polar bears a nice grizz is the same size

Not to be outdone by you'se fellers out west ........

Check out this griz shot this past weekend, just outside Sussex here in NB.

I know this fellow personally and have seen the bear myself. He wants me to cut it up for him, but I don't do bears.

....................Actually the whole story on that New Brunswick bear was on Canada AM this morn!!!!:dancingbanana:
I heard it on the regional CBC radio this morning as well.

Grizzlies are pretty rare here in NB, but I usually see a couple every year.
