How big of an investment is this?

Hi all,
I have a darling 1909 custom rifle in 6mm. I would like to make it into what I would consider my ultimate favorite combination, a '98 action that holds 300 H&H cartridges in the magazine well.
I would get Ron Smith to rebore the barrel for me so that isn't so much an issue here. I am just wondering what kind of investment is involved to lengthen the magazine, open the rails and the bolt head and make her feed like geased lightning.
Anyone know who will do this work for a reasonable fee, please contact me.

A considerably amount of the metal behind the bottom bolt lug recess will have to be ground away to make it feed. This converts it from having two full strong locking lugs to one and a half locking lugs. I would guess that would not be a problem as Browning did that to one of their rifles they marketed many years ago.
The bolt face and the magazine rails will require alterations as well to accept the larger case.
A lot of work for a classic old cartridge not much better than an 30-06.... you must want it bad...:D
 
I've seen and used versions of the 98 action that had most of the metal for this modification taken from the rear, so the locking lug issue becomes less of a problem. As mentioned Browning (and tons of other manufacturers) did it with the front lug cut for thousands of firearms, so I doubt that it's that big of a deal. I would discuss it with Ron, and ask him to take as much of the metal removed form the rear of the action, and modify the bolt stop, release, etc accordingly. It shouldn't be that much of an issue. - dan
 
Dennis, oh yeah I want it bad for sure,
I've had a few 06's and they are okay.
Anyone can pack a 30-06 Rem 710,so to speak yawn.

The goal here is a pure classic rifle with a classic cartridge.
Would like to loose some of the weight at the same time, it won't get shot a whole bunch so I don't mind the recoil increasing.

Dan, I will chat up the work with Ron, last I talked to him he didn't seem too interested in action work, I'll tell him you sent me!

It is much less work to purchase a new Winchester Classic in .30-06 and work it over--put in new mag box and follower, cut back ejector and re-chamber, fine tune feeding--that's what I did a few years ago--cost, not including the rifle was around $200.00.

FWIW, 44Bore.
