Hi. I don't know much about shotguns....

plus I don't have the gun with me.

My question is : how to make sure a 12 ga Beretta A302 is a 2 3/4 or is a 3" ?

the barrel is 27

would it say magnum or 3" on the receiver , or on the barrel? or else?

thanks for your time

ok thanks RobSmith

do you know what exactly has to be written ? will it says magnum or 3" ? so you know?
and it should be on the barrel, not on the receiver, or both?

I'm told this is written on the barrel , under the forestock : CAM.70 XGO 980 18. 3
C99554F

what does it mean?

again , thanks for your time

From my limited experience, it should say 3", "magnum" is just a marketing gimmick for 3" and 3 1/2 " cartridges. And it should be right on top of the barrel, visible without dissasembly. I don't have any Berettas, but all my guns have the caliber stamp on the left side of the barrel, a few inches the receiver. Both my 870's are marked right above where the forearm is.

What do you meen by "magnum is just a marketing gimmick for 3" and 3 1/2 " cartridges"? I thought it denoted a larger more powerfull shell that should not be used in 2 3/4" in. chambers. That's like saying a 22lr and 22wmr are just a marketing gimic. They are completely different cartriges with the same bore diameter.

Let me rephrase, 3" and 3.5" cartridges are "called" magnum, but AFAIK there is no such thing as "non-magnum" 3" and 3,5" cartridges ...

I had a A302 that I beleive just said magnum on it, no 3" or 2/34 designation. It was 3" though.

It if doesn't say 3" chamber anywhere on the barrel (and it might not) look at the proof marks. A 3" chamber may have 12/76 or CAM 76 somewhere on it. 76mm equals a 3" chamber. If it says CAM 70 or 12/70 then it's 2-3/4".

Not to be obvious, but why wouldn't you just try to chamber a 3" shell?
Gently.

That doesn't tell you anything. A 3" shell will fit in a 2-3/4" chamber.

Claybuster's right. That 3" shell will fit in the 2-3/4" chamber, but there be no room for the crimped end to open up properly as it will be within the forcing cone.
