How close to expect Nosler Ballistic tips and Accubonds to load

I've developed a hunting load with Accubonds for my FN Win 70 30-06 with IMR 4350, CCI BR2. I purchased some Ballistic tips as they are a bit cheaper and have the same BC.

Both are 165 gr.

My goal is to use the BT at the range I practice off hand shots and shots from shooting sticks. Needless to say I won't be expecting the same accuracy as on the bench if I developed a load for these.

How reasonable is it for me to load up the BTs with the same recipe, see what the accuracy is like on the bench, and go to it with my shooting sticks or off hand practice; rather than going through load dev separately given the goal is simply to practice off hand?

The Accubond load dev resulted in a 1-2.5 MOA variation between best and worst groups.

There is a bit of an enigma in the Ballistic Tip/Accubond point of impact.
While some rifles print them both to the same place, others will not.

If you measure your Ballistic Tip length, and the Accubond length, you may find the NAB is slightly longer.
I suspect this has something to do with jacket thickness. [NAB is thicker]

The new "Hunting" Ballistic tip is close, though.
The only way you will find out is to try it. It may just work fine.

Regards, Dave.

There is so much variation in the various calibers and weights of Ballistic Tips, that I hate to make a prediction. In some calibers and weights, the jackets appear identical, in others the Accubond appears to have a thicker jacket. The only way to find out for sure, is to shoot them both.

Hometownhero, I'm sure you are right. Ill did in my journal when I'm in the basement tomorrow. I'm sure that there is an element of user error that limited my groups. I've found that I need to let the barrel cool far longer than I would have expected or my groups open up.

Are you doing 3 or 5 shot groups with the fw? I found anymore then 3 in a row is pushing it. I have gotten .5" or less though If Im on that day.

It is nice to find a matched set of cheap(er) and pricey hunting bullets that have the same point of impact. I have a pair of reduced loads in 243 for the 87gr V-MAX and 85gr TSX that have the same POI at 100 yards - very handy for the young-un to get lots of trigger time without the expensive bullet.

What might help is to have the bullets loaded so there is a similar jump to the lands. I set up a dummy round with the TSX to set the seating die, and then use the die at that setting for the V-MAX as well. The COAL is different between the two loads, but the jump is similar. Worked in my case - might be worth a try.

X3 on what Eagleye said
My .270 shoots both bullets (at same weight) differently. Dropped the B-tips for Accubonds as the rifle and the Accubonds shot better.

This is exactly what I have been talking about!

My 270, [Vanguard S1] shoots the 140 NAB into very nice, tiny groups regularly.
However, The 140 Ballistic Tip is hard pressed to average 1¼" with the same load.

If I change powders, I can get the BT in under moa, but it will not reach the level of accuracy of the NAB of the same weight.

The other nuisance is that the two bullets shoot about 1" apart horizontally no matter which loads I use.
Needless to say, the 140 NAB gets the nod. :)

Regards, Dave.
