How close to furnace is too close?

"My powder will be stored in a wood box once I get it made and rolled under the crawl space away from heat sources"

Use brass screws and hinges, amazing what a stray bit of static can do. Make sure it's vented as well. A sealed box can become a wonderful projectile(s). Stay away from electrical at least 1 meter, for everything, I believe that's the standard for code in Canada. Check out the stickies in this forum and read up on the explosives act, and check your local reg's as well.

I may be wrong, but I believe it's against the Electrical Code to block the panel, eg they want nothing on the wall below it... but I don't have a code guide anymore..

Smokeless doesn't explode when burnt in the open air, it needs compression, it does burn quite fast though. That's all, just burn, no kaboom.
Most furnaces are shielded well enough that this isn't a concern.
Black powder on the other hand, can be dangerous when exposed to a spark, and possibly could go boom.
If you are a few feet from your furnace, and you don't intend to load black powder, IMO, you'll be fine.
Be sure that there are no air ducts that might direct fan forced air toward your scales.

not meant to hijack thread, but could use some advice along same lines, limited interior house space.

in process of planning a built of large 2 car unattached garage this summer, and would like to set up reloading there permanently, although activity is for the summer/fall months. installing a heater for use in cold months.

what is the experience or advice as to freezing cold (saskatchewan) that could affect year round storage of powder and primer (would be locked metal filing cabinet) the garage will be insulated and vented and don't think hot temperature would be problem.

is the safe bet still to bring all powder and primers and reloaded ammo inside house?

thanks.

Self ignition of Nitro-Powder is at 75 Celsius Temperature.
Electric-static ignition can occur immeadeatly. So dont vacuum your Floor where your Reloading Bench is located. ( you always loose some )
Self ignition through static loaded vacuum cleaner bags happend in the past through vacuum cleaner.

The best storage for Nitro Powder is at a temperature between 10-20 C and less variation as possible. If a Nitro Powder drys out it will be more progressive. The moisture in it controls the burn rate. So keep always the can closed and store the Powder back into the can.

i would be more worried about temperature changes than the powder igniting most powders are fairly coarse and jsut fall to the groud they don't seem to get sucked in anywhere or anyhting but i kno my furnace/hot water tank room gets really hot when the furncae is on and the door is closed and vice versa in the summer with the A/C....

but i kno it syas to try to store powder (and ammo for that matter) where the tmperature will be somewhat constant....

johnkwok,
I would bring in your powder and primers from the cold garage, as you will have condensation problems with your powder and primers. It is safest to have your powder in a controlled climate. Even your dies and press will begin to rust as well after exposed condensation on the metal.
