How complicated is Silver Soldering ?

Okay, I've returned from the range after letting the RED Loctite cure for over 24 hrs.

I let loose 140 rds of 115gr copper plated slugs going about 1275 fps (quite hot, eh ?) and then the front sight worked its way loose.

That's it !! No more goofing around. This pistol slide is going to Gunnar in Prince George, BC. I want to support our "banner" dealers/gunsmiths on the CGN board so here it goes to www.armco-guns.com

Well, then again I should give The JB Weld or some DEVCON a shot.... I'll let you know how it goes....

Cheers,
Barney

I've never found loctite to be good for anything other than holding bolts in. Personally I would have tried JB weld. I know most guys just cringed at the thought of that but when used properly I've found it to be just under welding for strength. We use it at work for Cylinder liners in engines and have yet to have one fail. (actually we use a product from 3M but JB weld is quite close) It has a 5000psi tensile strength and is rated for 500 degrees. It's also quite easy to shape with ordinary metal working tools. I have it holding my rear sight on my M1 right now and it's never going to come off.

yeah jb weld would of worked well. Also lead free plummers stuff I have used worked quite well. I bonded a bayonet lug on a shotgun barrel and its never going to come off. You don't have to heat it hot enough to ruin the temper.

Labmetal should be Okay in some instances where locktight fails. I saw it at Praxair - it's steel coloured very hard compound.

And good news: inspired by 10x and tiriaq I soldered my metal bandsaw blade with silver. Two minutes: one to grind the ends at 30° angle and one to apply flux, heat up and touch the area with the alloy wire. It's a breeze! Sooo easy! Jig was improvised from drill press vise and two G clamps.

Be sure to mike the dia. of the splice, it should be the same thickness as the blade itself, or smaller. If it is larger, it will raise hell with your guide bearings.

The proper loctite to use is "depend" according to my chart. It's an adhesive/sealant.Quote;High impact, tough instant sealant.
Personally I've used Loctite 609,when the fit has gone on a bearing, and it held.
Cheers nessy.

svt 40 try using 2 cotter pins to hold your bandsaw blade when silver souldering the joint, its a lot easier than using c type clamps, clamp the cotter pins in the vise lightly, butt up the edges , tighten and soulder.:) :) for souldering with silver bearing soulder try using a heat gun, works great with very little oxidation, takes a little longer but does a cleaner job. hope i dont get graded on my spelling lol.:)
