bruno; good to be cautious. Problem is, there are so many variables when one is reloading. [i.e. Barrel groove/bore diameter, chamber dimensions, freebore, throat erosion, bullet diameter, bullet hardness, powder lot burn rate, primer type, case capacity (varies between makers) bullet seating depth] the list goes on. In my personal experience, spanning some 45 years, most manual loads listed as maximum are recorded with a small amount of room for safety. That being said, Certain manuals in the past have listed some very "hot" loads as maximum. Most of the later ones have safety as the primary concern. You cannot assume that your rifle will accept loads beyond those listed as maximum in any given manual. If you do not have a chronograph, buy one. This is the best tool you can have to get some idea of how close you are to a max load in your rifle. I'll give an example: In most 24" barrelled 270 Winchesters, the maximum you can expect to get safely with a 130 grain bullet is about 3100 fps (+-50) If you are checking bullet speed and find that 60 grains of H4831SC is giving you only 2910 fps, you may be able to move up carefully a bit to come closer to that velocity, as long as no other pressure signs are apparent. I measure all my brass at the base with a VERNIER MICROMETER (measures to .0001") If I detect ANY base expansion in addition to the .0005"-.0007" allowed on the first firing of new brass, I consider that load too hot, and back off. Other factors to watch for are: sticky extraction, primers that are very flat, or cases that grow in length a lot each time they are fired. But the chronograph has usually already told me that I am on the warm side by the velocity readings. Again an example: I once inadvertently dumped a powder charge in an R-P 7x57 case that I had worked up in Winchester brass. (the R-P brass has a considerably smaller capacity than WW brass in 7x57). I was chronographing the loads as I shot them from my Ruger #1 SS Rifle. The bullet was the 150 Partition with old Norma 205 powder. Figures read like this: 2790, 2785, 2792, 2779, 2973! Guess which was the R-P case! When I opened the underlever, the primer fell out of the case. I kept the case and the figures as a reminder to watch my cases. Experience is a great thing, but you don't get any without experimenting a bit. The manuals are a guide, but a good guide usually. Seldom in our litigious age, will you find a max load in a manual that is actually too hot. The caution still applies....start lower and work up. I use 6% as the amount to lower a given max for a starting load. It has always worked for me. Hope all this gibberish has helped a bit. Regards, Eagleye.
