How crappy does it have to be before you pass on going out?

I was just thinking of possibly getting some load development in on my days off coming up and was considering the weather forecast and was thinking about how cold and windy it would have to be before I decided not to go out. The last time I went out it was about -25c and my trigger hand was burning from the wind. I'll be calling it quits before then next time I think.

Unless it's a new exciting rifle I would not go out in the -20's.

For a afternoon of coyote hunting.. Heck yes. Just not load development.

I only get to the range around 20 times a year so sometimes I encourage myself to go when its really s**tty. If I'm uncomfortably cold or its heavy wind then load development is a waste of time and quite frustrating. Whether its the conditions, a load, a rifle or my shooting, I often have reasons to be frustrated. But I keep going back.

A bad day at the range beats a good Day at work any time lol!
It depends what I am doing, if I am sighting in or load developing it has to be nice,
But if I just want trigger time It has to be prety bad out for me not to go! Besides if you get good at shooting when it's bad conditions it's relative to when the weather is great!

Heres a good one. I won't work outside at -18 or lower, but I'll still shoot to say -28. Go figure. Trigger time is usually a good time. The worst wind I've shot in I was aiming 16 feet off the target at 1000 yards. 19.2 moa.

I agree, load development in bad conditions SUCKS!!!! But just shooting in them, for me, is something I like to do. I always say that if you don't shoot in the wind you will never know how. Everyone I shoot with says "it too windy" and I just say "when isn't it?" When its cold the gun doesn't care, just the bullet.

When its that cold and windy, its a good day to practice shooting from the truck.

What are these -20's that you speak of?

Seriously though, on the wetcoast if you don't
shoot in s**tty weather, you dont shoot. I
don't know if cold, wet and windy is worse than
the ball numbing cold you get but I'm in no
hurry to find out.

Last weekend was spent hanging a gong. We did
this in a downpour of freezing rain (~50mm), it
took the better part of the day, but we stayed to
shoot it.

last year we loaded up a propane heater and pushed the road into the range with a backhoe. our range only has 2 lanes in a small building so a few guy and a propane heater im sure it was at least minus 30 a couple times. Damn sure the same thing will be happening this year when the xcr-m comes.

I couldn't care less what the weather is doing. Life is too short. If I get a day off for a hobby, I use it irrelevant of the weather. On the shooting side, there has been a number of times where I went when the last ~5-10K of the range road were impassible. It just meant it was a hike to the range. Means I know my gear works in ~-33-~+33 C though.

Looking back, that isn't true for me, but I sure remember the tags I've filled on nasty days then though -- this is going to suck to clean.

there are only 2 reasons I quit the benchrest:

-All the ammo is gone
-The wind is so strong the projectiles leave the barrel at 100 fps

It used to bother me having quite cold weather through Dec-Jan and not shooting much, but it's just part of the cycle now. Those little shake activate hand warmers do a good job of keeping your fingers from freezing in short sessions of minus 30 though.

If the weather conditions won't allow me to see the accuracy potential of a load, I won't bother attempting to do any load development. I also won't commit to a load, until it has been tested in the warmest conditions that I will shoot in, to verify that there won't be any pressure issues.

Just shooting & hunting? No weather stops me. This is Canada and rain, snow, cold & windy are just part of life. Get over it and get on with it I will admit to avoiding Rain though - not for my comfort levels, but for the gun. It's one thing to get caught out in a hunt and get rained on - that's why they make cleaning kits - but I'd rather not go out and soak a gun in water for a day of plinking in the rain if I dont' have a good reason to.

Developing a new load for a rifle? No more than 5mph winds. I don't want the wind screwing with my groups when I am tryign to find a rifle's "happy place".

Ya know what, how easy it is to go shooting on a regular basis plays the biggest impact on cold I think.

I had to move to Edmonton for a few years and that made shooting a weekend only thing. if it was planned no weather would stop you.
I moved back out of there anyway and to go shooting is to go for a small walk. If it's super cold I might wait till the next day and see if it's warmer.

Im a fair weather shooter for the most part. Mainly shoot handgun indoors in the winter. Get out the rifles on mild days only.

I find that development done in the frigid cold is useless in the extreme heat of summer. Once it gets the point of ignorant cold or ignorant hot, I lose interest in outside shooting.
