Cringed a bit when I witnessed someone doing it at the range and wondered what the chance of it going off was. 1% 10% 50%?
If you're looking to set your dies so that they will give you factory dimensions from a factory unfired round just pull the bullet and dump the powder and fire off the primer in firearm. This way you will have factory brass and not risk loosing fingers and subsequently adopting the name stumpy.
Zero chance. However, if they fail to recognze this as a possible unsafe practice, then I'm guessing that this isn't the only blatant and stupid act they participant in thru the course of a day. I'll watch the Darwin Site.
Sooooooo, 0% chance but still unsafe? I see.
Perfectly safe and less than zero chance of it going off, as to get the soot on the case its well above the point of high heat in the flame. If your fingers arent getting burned there is no chance that the primer will go off and less than no chance of the powder going off. If you leave ammo in a car in direct sun in the heat of summer it will get to around 200 degrees inside and probably higher in the southern states and this has never set off ammo. You can through a live round into a fire and it will be several minutes before it goes off (seen it happen years ago) so a lighter isnt going to provide the heat needed.
So either the guy is a blazing idiot as stated above and does alot of stupid things or maybe he is very smart and has thought it through before doing it. Who ever saw it can make the call on that, but its not always just a guy being stupid
Felt pens don't blow things up.

I too have witnessed rifle shells in a blazing woodstove that did not go off for atleast 10 minutes. I was quite surprised. The dodgey part was that 3 were thrown in but only 2 went off. There weren't a lot of volunteers to check on the third.
