How disadvantaged with open cyl. and 18" barrel?

I have an 870 express 18" pump, curious how disadvantaged I would be just informally shooting clays.
What would handicapp me more, the open cyl. or the short barrel?

Also, how much (if any) of a disadvantage would I have?

You won't have very much range, but if it's just informal and fun then go for it!

Just be quick before the clay gets out of range.

On close targets no serious disadvantage with the cylinder choke. The shorter barrels mean you have to pay more attention to keeping the gun moving but as long as you do there's no disadvantage there.

also be aware that some clubs express some "concern" regarding short shotguns...the concern is in regards to muzzel control when walking around and the bark that comes from the really short ones.

The muzzle control issue does have some merit. When I use my 14" 870 to shoot skeet I keep the gun in the rack or slung muzzle down on my shoulder.

As for the noise an 18" gun isn't as obnoxious as most ported guns.

jimbo, bring it up to PoCo, and try, if you're can't it the side of a barn with it... someone will lend you a longer gun... =)

I'm not an offical member; i just pay the day card, would that be a problem? I really need somebody to show me the ropes. :dancingbanana:

I'm curious as to how the short gun did busting clays. How about an update?

The fellows that I see shooting trap with them from time to time have a real hard time busting targets. Might work better for skeet.

well i didn't try yet, i was thinking to just get a porable flinger and doing it on crown land at my own pace *shrug*

i found for shooting clays out a canada tire spring thrower, i did better i with my 870 marine magnum with no choke, than my freinds mosberg 835 with a modified choke in it (28" barrel i belive)
i found the MM was faster to get on target, and faster to rack the action on, so i had no problem shooting doubles.
i dont know how much faster a 'real' thower throws them, but id like to give it a try.

With a hand thrower, or even one of those spring type throwers, that you anchor to a spare tire, you very well may break a few targets. The range would be limited that the target would be thrown, so an open choke, short barreled gun might work out.

I was thinking that you were going to a trap range, where the targets leave the machine already 16 yards away, and throw them an additional 50 yards. That is pushing it for such a gun, as the shot pattern would be so open downrange.

It's still a heck of a lot of fun shooting hand thrown. We do it once and awhile, at an abandoned gravel pit near Mission. My longer barrels and tighter chokes are a disadvantage, at the closer targets, but it makes it more of a challenge.:)

i've shot clays with a marine magnum and i was hitting them, we had a spring thrower throwing the clays

The choke would make the gun o.k. for skeet but the short barrel would be a handicap as it would not aid in pointing, swinging, and followthru, also noise and recoil become a distraction for the shooter and squad mates. For trap it is useless as the pattern would be so thin that the bird could be centered in the pattern but won't catch any pellets and you would be guessing if you are on the bird or not!! From a birdshooting(clay or feathered) standpoint I cannot see any value to a barrel shorter than 24".

is that legal i was wanting to do that too but not shure of the legality??

I have been using my buddy's 870 marine to shoot clay's all weekend. It does well but doesnt have a huge range as is expected. Get them in the first few seconds and it does great.
