Alright I figured I'd give you guys the lowdown.Lemme clear up some stuff.
Echo4lima is correct.Mostly.We take most of our semis and full autos and drill out the barrel, tap it and use a constrictor that is threaded in from the front. The size of the hole varies depending on what gun and what load is being used. Some guns like M-16's, G-36's and Mp-7's have a muzzle break which we take off, drop in the constrictor and screw it back on.Anything that doesn't need gas to operate is not modified.Bolt guns, revolvers, lever actions and some shotguns are all good to go with live ammo.HENCE the need to be extremely carefull on set so we don't get another Brandon Lee incident. We actually have much stricter rules for ourselves up here than they do in the states.Blanks are crimped for the most part, but some aren't and are blocked off with wadding.Usually shotgun ammo. The crimped blanks come in all kinds of lengths. Some are puposely short and some are longer.Depends on what the weapon likes to eat. Some will eat anything we feed them. Some are very picky. The P90's we use on SG1 and Atlantis are finiky. They have to be kept VERY clean or they don't function very well. The FiveseveN's we use on Battlestar only like one type of ammo.It varies by gun.
The powders used are the same powders you guys reload with. Not anything special.Having a constrictor down the barrel causes plenty of back pressure and gives it enough time to burn almost completely.
Any other questions?
That blank firing "THING" that has the flame coming out the top, has a solid plug and is made from pock metal is super bush league. Is it home brewed? It would never make it on set here.
