How do I choose the optics?

I'm pretty much decided on weatherby vanguard 2 with 308 caliber. Now there are different combos available and looks like great deals.
So far I can see it coming with 3-9 x 42mm Redfield® Revenge™ At cabellas
Also CGN seller has a combo for sale with Nikon monarch 4x16x42 plex

I have very little understanding in this field and do not own any scopes at the moment, so any help would be great...

Trying to get this combo in the range of $1000.

What are you intending to use the rifle for?

A simple 3-9 is a good first scope in my opinion, but it really depends on your application (hunting, paper punching, matches, ect).
 
ok, so I didn't think any kit combo's are actually a great deal. so I ordered rifle separately and when it arrives, I will possibly choose scope separately then.

I'm looking for range shooting, realistically more than hunting, therefore think vortex diamondback maybe, but reviews are mixed at least on wholesale sports site..

If you are looking to do more range shooting than hunting, look at options with a higher maximum range (16x for example), but try to stay 5x power or less if you do plan on hunting with it. The 4-16 is a great magnification range to kill two birds with one stone, as the 4x will allow for easier target acquisition on an animal within a hundred yards, but you will have the 16x power to really reach out with. This being said, magnification power does not always mean better for long distance. You will want to buy the best glass you can afford, even if it means going with a lower magnification range. I have shot accurately to 960 yards with a 10x power Swarovski Z3 on a .300 WSM and I attribute that to the clarity of the glass allowing me to clearly see the target at that range. My suggestion is go into a store and try some different scopes out to see which glass works best for you. Some models I recommend checking out are the Vortex Diamondback HP (much better glass than the standard Diamondback for not much more money), the Leupold VX-2, and the Nikon Monarch 3 to start out with. As has been mentioned already you should really check out a few scopes in the store to see what you like. As you are new to this it might take a little looking around to decide on what kind of scope works for you. You already know your budget so now you can look at the power ranges available and the reticle options. Have fun with it!

Happy to help. Swarovski is a bit steep for a lot of pockets I'd say, but well worth the price when you compare the glass. You don't need to go Swarovski to get a great performing scope that will do what you need it to do. The scopes I mentioned above are a good starting point to look into. There are a lot of points to cover when deciding on what features you will benefit from and the bare essentials to look for in any optic. Scopes are my favorite equipment to talk about, so give me a call and we can go over some info on optics.

if money is not an issue then u got a very wide selection. but if you were like me looking for the best value for the money check that link. now for me i have a rule to select maginification. 2x is ideal for 100 meters, 3x for 150m, 4 x for 200m. basically divide the x value by 2 then add a couple of zeros to get the ideal meter range. however, for 4x you can still shoot 400 meters but not ideal.
