You have to remove the handguard ferrule. The furrule is the metal piece on the end of the gas tube assembly which abuts the gas port under the front sight assembly. It is attached by a rivet which you need to remove before you can pull the wooden handguard off. With the Tapco hanguard you should also have received a replacement rivet for when you put it all back together.
I drilled a small diameter hole through the flattened end of the rivet and then used a small cold chisel to knock the end off. It was actually a real pain , if I was to do the job again I think I would have a gunsmith do it.
I don't know why Tapco and the other companies do not send a new gas tube with their handguard already attached. It and a new piston would not add all that much to the overall price at the volume they could buy at.
Tapco actually sells a replacement gas tube with new hanguard/rail attached - they probably heard how hard it was to remove the wood. I recall reading an article in Shotgun News about this.
What I have done is simply used the original wooden handguard and will spray paint it black to match the Tapco stock as I have no interest in the plastic picatinny-style rail.
