How do I price a rare Inglis Browning High Power

I own a super rare BHP that appears in Clive Laws book "The Inglis Diamond". It has a serial number of D1 and is described as a "one off". The Canadian War Museum had it appraised at $5,800. Guns with a similar story known as Colt 'Singers" (made by Singer sewing machine co during WWII) sell for tens of thousands of US bucks.

I want to sell/trade this gun and need some help coming up with a fair price. If anyone had had experience or wants to offer up an opinion, I would be most grateful. I can PM pictures if that will help. The gun is in almost perfect condition and has very good documentation to validate the piece as a collector.

Cheers.

You could donate it to the war museum for a tax write-off if you can use it. If not, consider offering it on the boards for around $3500 to 4000. You'll NEVER get the apraised insurance value. They are inflated to account for "replacement cost" if the insurer had to buy it from someone who may not be motivated to sell.

You may want to consider putting in a big gun auction. There is little doubt that a big collector would be willing to go $10,000+ for it, the trouble is attracting the collectors.
Having said that, well done you, would you take $1,000 for it?

Hate to say it but with something like that you would probably get a better price for it in the USA, more gun collectors with way more money.

Selling in the US of A

I agree with your comment about the market in USA. I looked into legally exporting the gun to an auction house and it is a big hassel. If anyone is planning a trip to a gun show and wants to become my selling partner, let me know. I know it can be done but it appears onerous at first glance. I see that Cabellas is planning to set up shop in Quebec. I wonder if they will include their gun brokering service? I spoke with them in Texas and they were very interested in marketing the gun but were not interested in the importing problems that came with it.

I may have to sell to a Canadian brother and leave it at that.

Cheers.

"D" serial prefix

Isn't that interesting... I too have a unique Browning HP and have read over those books. The books don't describe the serial number that I have. The one I have has a "D" prefix and a "X" suffix. What kind of documentation do you have to validate it as a collectors piece? Off on a side note, the chapter on the New Zealand B HP's where they list off the ones that are known to have "gone over" I noticed that I actually have that one!

Could you elaborate why it is a "one off". Based on sewrial number alone, I wouldn't consider it a one off. Is there something else unique on it. BTW, until today I had the lowest serial numbered "D" series pistol that I knew of!

"Based on serial number alone," as far as I know my Browning (Belgium & Portugal) is the only one that has its serial number, so it's a "one off". There has to be more to it than that. Do tell us the whole story.

This thread is over a year old!
cptchaos, did you ever sell your pistol?

The gun with the D prefix and X suffix is an Inglis?

One of my Inglis pistols is also listed in Clive Laws book as being sent to New Zealand in the 60s. Does anyone know when they were returned to Canada?

It's a shame that the serial number is in poor shape. It is actually "engraved" in all three places, frame, slide and barrel. For some reason the slide and barrel are electro-penciled in.
