How do I remove cleaning rod from trapdoor

I just got home from purchasing an 1884 springfield trapdoor and cannot figure out how to remove the cleaning rod. It might be that I'm just not using enough force, or maybe theres a special way.

l think it screws into a small block at the breach. If I am correct you would have to unscrew it about 4 turns then pull it out.

Just tried it and that doesn't work.

Next I tried forcing it out with success. I guess you have to flex the medal an amount to get it out.

Gently pull the front end of the rod away from the stock (down) while pulling it forward. A spring catch in the stock engages a groove in thr rod.
