I've been shooting about five years now but recently I've really got into the art of the sport. I've started modifying my rifle and hand loading my ammunition. I currently only have a Ruger M77 Mark II in 30-06 (bushnell 3200 elite 4-12x40) and a Benelli MR1 (223) but would like to start competing in some shoots. I'm not a sniper by any means but have been able to kill a Tim hortons coffee cup at 500 meters with my 30-06 some what consistently. So my main questions are:

I live in Edmonton, where do I go to start competing?
Are there classes for my current rifles?
Are my current shooting skills good enough to compete?

Wow

What sized coffee cup? LOL. You have the skills, someone from the Alberta rifle association should be able to help you out. It's a great sport good luck.:)

You will have to travel to get to the matches. There are long ranges across the Prairies. There are other threads on CGN that discuss F-Class matches at Nokomis, SK. If you go to a big shoot, you will meet the guys who are interested in long range shooting, see what kit works best and learn what you need to do in order to succeed. Plan a few roadtrips and bring your kit, but don't expect to show up unannounced, unprepared and uninformed of how the match runs, or you will just be underfoot.

Best thing is to go to the APRA website, and check the F-Class schedule. We have matches every month, and new shooter clinics every month starting in April. Your skill's don't matter for competition, everyone starts out somewhere and increase their skill's as they learn more and gain experience.
You will learn more at competitions shooting, and chatting with other experienced shooters than you would reading 100 books.
There are many ranges around the province that you can shoot at, but most of the long range matches are shot at the Homestead range. So if you in Edmonton, that's about a 3.5 hour drive. You can also camp at the range, and matches are 20.00 per day..
