Hi Guys I'm new to the Garand, how can I tell if it is a baretta Garand? the receiver says springfield M1 with serial number1754###
What else do I look for and what is a fair price for a Barretta

Thanks

Thanks guys, could it be a Springfeild with a barretta barrel? it has a pb stamped at the front sling mount and crown with VAR under it on the barrel, all the other parts end with SA. The guy wants 800. I think it is too much but I am not sure

Thanks

VAR is a Danish rebuild barrel. It sounds like a mixmaster of US/Itallian/Danish parts. I wouldn't pay $800 for it........
VAR--DANES
PB--BERETTA
BMR or BMB--BREDA
SA--Springfield
HR--H&R
W--Winchester
IH--International Harvester

There are many other sub contractor markings as well, but these would be the most common

Nothing wrong with a VAR barrel. Better than a 60s SA barrel IMO.
The Danes did good work when it came to Garands and the Italians
made some parts that are far better than the USGI stuff. If its a Danish
rebuild and the parts are SA and Italian its not a mixmaster. Its a rifle that clearly shows its history as WW2 Garand that went to Europe and went
through a very good rebuild program. Those rifles typically show very little
internal wear due to long term storage. Ive seen several that fit that description and almost all showed the same wear characteristics. Very good barrels, Post war upgrades, no rust and the wood looks worse than anything. Lots of cosmo still inside as well.
It might even have a sticker in the barrel channel of the stock with a date on it. Its not usually a rifle that bubba got a hold of and put whatever junk he had to make a complete rifle. If that was the case i would consider it a mixmaster. SA with Italian parts and VAR barrel. Thats
probably a keeper.

more info

Thanks guys, it does have a information sticker on the inside of the stock. I can't read it as it is in another language. I will get more data in the morning, anything in particular I should look for?

Thanks

Sticker is nothing special, just gives the 300m zero from number of clics up from bottom/center IIRC and the guys name that zeroed it.
seriously, you can build one and have it completly refinshed for less then $800......quite a bit less if you shop around.
It's just a rebuilt mixmaster shooter, who cares if some Danish armorer or your own gunsmith puts a barrel on a receiver, you can even do that yourself with a few proper tools. All the small parts just pop right in, nothing to it.
I'd buy 3 1917's or a couple of 1903's for $800 before I would ever consider dropping that kind of money on a mixmaster Garand.....hell, I'm building a .308 M1 with a brand new $300 Douglass barrel and it's going to be less then $800 when it's all said and done.
But hey, it's your cash.
