How do you explain shooting coyotes?

Just to clarify, this wasn't anti's on hunting. It was family while the three of us were hunting. Some members of my family are deep in the tradition that you only kill an animal for very set reasons. You are going to eat it yourself, it's wounded and needs to be put out of it's misery, or it's attacking you or your livestock. They just cant see going out to hunt something like Coyotes just for the "fun" of it.

Make some Coyote jerky for them.. enuf said.

Around here I'd say they eat loon eggs.
"Would you rather have a dead coyote or dead baby loons, your choice?"

Or "it was bound to get hit by a truck sooner or later, I'm just putting it out of it's misery in advance..."

Im pretty much done explaining myself to anyone. "what kind of phone do you have, what kind of car do you drive, why do you hunt, why do you eat meat, killing animals is wrong" One guy at work explained to me that if I miss an animal Im hunting, I KILL A TREE
No talking douche bag, no talking. :kickInTheNuts:

tell him that everytime you DON'T miss, an angel gets its wings.:D

Man has broken the balances of wildlife populations, and is obligated to save what ever can be saved by interrupting in wildlife.Wildlife cannot make it on its own.People that are irrelevant with nature,or simply are antihunters, dont or do not want to understand.Theres a greek saying that gos like this:"from a pie you will not eat,who cares if it burnes".Antihunters basic goal is to see hunters out of the feilds and guns gathered, the rest that are irrelevant with these matters, shouldnt have an aspect on a matter they dont understand. So shoot for the sake of nature's delecate populations, they will not recover with out our help, Regards Sam.

Man has always been a part of the natural balance. It has always been up to him to keep it in check.

I guarantee you when there was a high population of coyotes eating up people's food source 1000years ago, they would kill them off and wear them like a hat.

Hunters of opportunity take what comes along, if there is lots of coyotes (or any other critter) then that is the most likely thing to get killed. That is how the balance works and it is still valid today.

I just had this same conversation a month ago. During the winter solstace, my Gf's mother witnessed 4 dogs pacing her fence. They routinly see 1 but not 4. this was the middle of the night. We have talked about hunting and they were "live and let live people"

She asked me why they were comming around ... I answered "they want to eat your 15 year old fluffy dog."

Now I am encouraged to shoot on sight. lol.

If you have coyotes where you live then you generally don't ask the question.

If you don't have coyotes where you live then you don't deserve an explanation.

If you have coyotes where you live and you still ask the question then you are an idiot and there's no point talking to idiots.

How do you explain shooting coyotes to people?

....usually goes something like this; I saw that yote comin' in around 200 yds away, had the crooshairs on his shoulder, touched off the shot and just saw the snow go red,,,,another dead yote.

End of story.

In Cape Breton everyone is scared to death of coyotes, if you were baggin yotes you would be a town hero. A hero!

DVXDude;
"I say my poor ol' lab was attacked by 4 blood thirsty coyotes a couple days ago. The ol bugger died in my arms and told me to make sure I kill every last one of the sonsa#####es...... "

I like this one, a little dramatic flair can go a long way to selling it, though. :D

Coyotes are an invasive species in Newfoundland. I just tell the tree huggers that I am attempting to restore the natural order of things and, in doing so, try and save our now threatened Woodland Caribou herds.

Mainly though, I do it because the Coyotes have pushed the foxes out of their normal territory, closer to human habitation, and increasing the odds that my hunting dogs will contract French Lungworm, which the Foxes spread through their feces.

Well, with 75 and soon to be76( double posters as well) comments added (and more to follow I am sure)
I really wouldnt waist my time trying to convert someone. For two reasons...
1) there are people who are better debaters than I and will argue their ideas till the cows come home.
2) I also understand Mother Nature has given the coyote a little gene that allows them to breed faster and harder when they are threatened with population loss.
It is a proven fact too.
So, my advice of late and I have given it to others locally and that is:
" If I have to Explain... You Will not understand !"
After all, who are we that has to explain our actions to those that do not partake in the types of activities we do.
Tight Groups,
Rob

It is a proven fact. It is the argument against shooting them from the coyotes-are-part-of-nature-and-you-have-to-live-with-them crowd.

What they don't tell you is that the coyote breeding cycle is very short and only once a year. If you reduce the female coyote population when they are denning up (around now) the surviving females will have larger litters a year from now. In the meantime fewer coyotes for a year.

Also if you shoot a coyote you're probably getting the curious ones or those who are not as frightened of humans. Weeding them out of the gene pool is a good thing.

I don't hunt coyotes. I will kill those that come around the house or barn or if I catch them denning up on our property. If they see me and scamper I might not shoot. If they stand their ground or come closer then it's lights out.
