How do you feel about that coyote / wolf eating your cat / dog?? No really!

Last interaction I saw between a cat and a coyote, the coyote was carrying the dead cat across a field. I was cheering for the coyote. At least coyotes belong in the outdoors, cats are just indiscriminate killers of everything. Last interaction my dog and I had with a coyote, the coyote was chasing my dog, and they ended up fighting. This was the result. An ounce of Bismuth #4 shot from a muzzleloader is effective coyote deterrent if you're close enough.

How I co-exist with coyotes is to go after every one that I seen near the house or barn. If they run they might live. If not they don't. Don't see that changing no matter what some university professor happens to say.

We are the same here. That goes for around our neighbour's places too. The neighbours actually text us if they see one.
Coyotes are fair game and good practice. We tend to stop what we are doing, if possible, and go after them if we see one.
We saw one take a neighbour's small dog many years ago, and if we have corn fields around the buildings, we will lose cats regularly in late summer.
The barns are only 100 feet from the house and we have found coyote scat between them.

i have had coyotes running in the yard , around the house and barn. the motion light does not scare them at all. they have squared off with the dog , killed a few cats but the current crop of cats we have now seems to have them figured out not wandering far from cover. i am curious to know if they tackle raccoons as i do not have them around like other years?

Keep your cat indoors. In Canada alone house cats kill an estimated 250,000 birds.

I do not believe in wolf culls or culling any predator for that matter. They are the stabilizers of the ecosystem. People will complain about wolves and cougars one week and then complain about the oversized deer population the next.

People are so disconnected from the natural environment that they forget it’s wild out there. Too many suburbanites with remote second properties letting their dog wander like it a city yard.

I has a friend who was hiking with her sister and dog, one wolf rushed down from high ground and another snuck up behind them. The did the smart thing and picked up the dog as the two wolves circled them and then elected to go drink at the lake. (Kenora, On)

I knew someone who lost a dog cause they let it room around woods at night. It was on the deck, one wolf playful lured it away. Owners noticed but two more wolves flanked in and put themselves between the deck/owners and their dog. RIP.

Nature is wild leave it that way. Be wise!

I would prolly not be hearing the end of for letting the ole ladies critter outta the house.
Be an incentive to get out and git some hunting action in.
Scientific ?
nah, just some carnal revenge.

A black bear can make a mess out of beef too.

Yes, bears will take livestock if they get an opportunity especially young calves sleeping on the edge of fields/bush. Unfortunately I believe we are going to have a bear population bump because of Covid and almost no U.S hunters last year.

My good buddy that I run hounds with had his 14 year old lab attacked by pair of coyotes one night about 4 years ago. Lucky he heard the dog yelping and got there in time. Both rear legs of the dog were chewed up bad, expensive vet bill and the dog didn't make it

Every coyote we kill in that block is for Shelly the black lab. We got 4 on Saturday.

Likely lost 40+ barn cats in the last 10 years....it's OK though they come and go. A good dog doesn't!

Exactly what I was going to say, in Quebec, the Fauna, Forests and Parks ministry puts the domestic cats in the invasive species list, cats puts terrible pressures on local ecosystems by hunting smalls mammals and birds. When small dogs and cat get killed by predators, it's actually a good thing for the ecosystem.

Birds thrive around people, cats or no cats. I was doing yard work yesterday and it seems that every bush/tree has a nest in it.

Go in the bush and see how many birds you see compared to near a house. This has been noted for centuries.

Tell that to the struggling caribou populations. :(

Grizz

The caribou population is being displaced and destroyed by the logging and oil / pipeline industry. They’ve done a great job convincing the public and politicians of BC and Alberta that wolves are to blame.

This 5 minute doc explains how having wolves return to yellow stone improved and changed the landscape because the predators forced the herbivores to change their behavior and where the grazed.

Yeah right, that's why the Caribou are functionally extinct in Southern BC. They literally fed the last Caribou to the wolves.

It is lies plain and simple that wolves have benefitted Yellowstone.

Go into the barrens and see how the caribou population has plummeted There is no logging or pipeline activity.

I'm on a website for lost pets in the county and the medium and small dogs that escape are usually taken by the coyotes if they are not found quickly.

even some of the bigger dogs have been lured out by coyote packs and killed.

I do my best to deter the coyotes from lingering around but can't set snares as there are dogs that get walked off leash that might end up in a snare.
